Ted
Whilst I do not entirely disagree with your views on the Vulcan’s appearance at the Olympic Games I think you must be wearing very rose-tinted spectacles to see the games in the gushingly “good” adjectives you ascribe to them. Give me the World Championship events any day. I doubt that all but a few would associate the Vulcan with nuclear war, etc. They might recall its participation in the Falklands War, with interest and pride, maybe. But I think for most it is like the Concorde, a big, beautiful, powerful beast.
And, by the way, I do hope it flies again this year, particularly having missed it last year at one of its “no-shows”, but having read this thread and others, I am doubtful.
Typical Hunter Squadron strength at this time was about 16 aircraft. This is why when 111-Sqn did the 22 aircraft loop they had to borrow some aircraft and pilots. 257-Sqn chequers were green and yellow with a ‘beastie’ in the centre. Happy days.
Goldilocks
Farnborough 1958 – The black Arrows plus 6. Never to be forgotten. Has it ever been bettered? Is there any film of it?
………..along with most of our air force?!:(
Yes, Ted, I did miss those hinted at reservations. My apologies. I suppose I just have no great love for these huge “world” events, at which over-hyped global “love” eclipses everything else for a few weeks and is then forgotten. A bit of a cynic, I’m afraid.
I was lucky enough to see the Vulcan many times from its first appearance at Farnborough through countless Airshows up to its retirement from service. It is, for me, a classic aircraft.
Mr Hanna if i remember correctly
Ah! Of course……….:)
Perhaps it has been posted earlier in this lengthy thread but always one of my favourites. The presenter’s exclamation makes it!
As an occasional visitor to the hostelry mentioned in the late 60s I am sure there was a plaque or a framed description of the incident, but the memory is a bit hazy after 40 odd years. Your post certainly rang a few bells.
Hmm.. sadly not the first time the Police have taken an interest in activities there. I’m sure a stolen vehicle / car ringing operation was uncovered there, and previous to that there was a case of illegal immigrants arriving / departing by light aircraft.
We had an industrial unit there for 2 or 3 years and there was a great deal of police activity at the time related to illegal immigration and at least two “snatches”.
I’ve never been and it sounds like great value for money. The date is in my diary. Where are opening times and other info to be found? I couldn’t find them n the link provided.
Excellent, thanks. And any more info nearer the time would be appreciated.
Highly deserved and long overdue. There is a good but small display at the Spit and Hurri Museum at Manston.
It is appalling, whoever is guilty. If it is teenagers, for the reason implied by an earlier post – that WW2 has no significance and it is not taught in schools – then we know who to blame – again!
Well, I am there with a youngster tomorrow and he will certainly enjoy any re-enactments on offer – Home Guard and a Lancaster rear-gunner talking about “his experiences” are on offer, I think, so I am really looking forward to our day.
I had forgotten Moggy’s differentiation between plans and ‘planes. I think you can get away with ‘planes if you are an American or Canadian speaker – or is it pedantic in any case?
What about this little fella – one flight before crashing for ever? And another Caproni!

That rather neatly summarises this thread from a relatively disinterested contributor, and encapsulates the position. I am a supporter but not a disgruntled one, just a disappointed one. I will continue to give my support and hope the the 2010 dream is achieved. If it isn’t it I will be sad, not angry.
