I know that TR1 , I am not blaming Gromov.:)
I had the idea (somehow) that the trials have progressed quite a lot , but disappointed to find out that quite a bit is still left.

What the heck! 75,000 INR per month is 180,000+ LKR! 😮 Thats a very good salary in this part of the world. Last year I couldn’t get that for the whole year 🙁

If it was 20,000 USD I could understand but 20,000 INR? Eh?

yes , after the last pay commission in India salaries have increased quite a lot in all sectors.during officers’ training before being commissioned , boots get a stipend of 21k pm in the final year.

What is the monthly salary for such a person in India?

The gross pay of somebody in a position of Wing co. today should be around 75k INR per month including DA ,band pay ,grade pay , transport allowance etc. which comes to around 1700$ pm .That may be quite less compared to international standards [I have no idea about other air forces to be honest] but its quite a lot in Indian terms.Compare this to software engineers who can start anywhere from say 25k – 30 k pm(depends).

Really , 20000 INR is quite a ridiculous amount.

    anyway OT.

It could be the Falcon. However I don’t think it would matter if it was the Falcon or the Rafale, it’s still Dassault. And considering how scared Indian politicians and other government institutions (like the military) have become of bribes or any affiliation with bribes whatsoever, I’d be surprised if this doesn’t effect the outcome.

Well I guess , if indeed that the initial approach was not from Dassault , and if Dassault officials informed the proper authorities , there should not be any adverse consequences for dassault.

But you are right about the political scenario.
    Only time will tell.

Anyway , about the shortlisted birds , any three of EF , Rafale , Gripen and Shornet should be there.

It is very popular among Indian Army aviators. My cousin flies Dhruvs in Jaisalmer’s hot desert clime and he absolutely loves it. He earlier flew Chetak (Alouette III) helis for the IA and the Dhruv is a huge improvement over it in almost every way.

Grp Cpt Hari Nari’s posts (the current LCH test pilot) on BRF reflect the same opinion on how good the Dhruv is to fly, and he claims that the LCH is even better, even more stable and he predicted it will be one damn fine attack gunship.

The Chilean evaluation actually went off very well, and they were most interested in the high altitude operations of the Dhruv, given that they operate in high Andean altitudes all the time. But politics and possibly HAL sales bungling meant that the Bell competitor was chosen despite being at least 10% costlier (at least that is what they advertise it as being- around 10-15% cheaper than any Western heli in that class). This after the Dhruv got the Chilean military flying certificate and flew over 100 hours over varied terrain during evaluations.

So if Dhruv can do what Cheetah can do and even much better , then why do we keep having these competitions for cheetah replacement with fennec etc.?
One reason can be that IAF wants a separate class of helos with lighter maintenance , costs etc requirement , but even then wouldnt it be prudent to wait for the hal LUH and use the dhruv in the meantime , rather than inducting a completely different helicopter type for that single role??

I dont understand how that position is more preferable…!

Added later : It could be dassault falcon?

I have no knowledge about IAF MiG 29 service history.
But only glance look and few seconds read are needed to find inaccuracies about European MiGs 29. Probably consequence of using bad resources.

Well I cant say about the european migs , but problems with migs in IAF is well documented.iirc there was some report about exactly this issue in some magazine maybe Vayu/Force a few years back.

re. Experience of the IAF with Mig 29 ,serviceability wise the experience was very poor. The reported serviceability of the Mig 29s were anywhere between 43% and 62%.Not only was it due to the manufacturing quality defects/problems by mig but also is due to total failure of HAL-Mig service JV known as IRAL (Indo Russian Aviation Limited). This led to severe cannibalisation of the Migs by the IAF base repair depots to keep them flying.
However towards the end of 2007 , agreements were signed for setting up several mig spare parts depot in India mainly for the Mig 29s and the Mig 21s.

Excellent info about problems of Mig 29 in IAF service here

kudos to Flateric who dug it up. Now go find youself a good chinese translator tool and dig in.
and after you finish the article, I hope you have a bit more respect and take back those some obviously ad hominems where it belongs.

That article has got nothing to do with “pakfa” as we know it.In 1993 the Chinese engaged consultants from Tsagi and Mikoyan for their SAC 601 and CAC 611 aero design institutes for preliminary study about a “chinese” 4/5th generation program known as the “2-03” program..Its NOT anything Russian!! That is so opposite to the “Russia approached China for their 5th generation aircraft” lol.:D
And this influence by Mikoyan on Chengdu may have ultimately led to the huge similarity of the J 20 with Mig 1.44 which was eventually rejected by Russia in favour the Sukhoi design and “pakfa” program was initiated.
You can also see this influence of Mikoyan on Shenyang in the pictures of J XX or J 14 etc floating around for a long time.

Like I said: He only knows what he knows. 😉

And he knows more than you.

To think that just because one person’s position he has the total sum of knowledge is rather irrational way to look at things.

Nobody claimed he has total knowledge of everything in this universe. But being in a position he is/was in , it wouldnt be surprising if he infact knew quite a lot about it.And he has even commented about it in open interviews.

As he (the Air Cmde of some airforce) is connected with the deal, and it is in Russian establishment’s every interest to discount the chinese involvement (a pre-condition on the buyer’s part), I highly doubt that He is in the position to know (or even if he knows, acknowledge) any previous attempts btw Russia and China to work together on this thing.

He is not just the Air Cmde of just “any” airforce , but the airforce who are the only partners in the development of the aircraft.Unless you have definite proof to contradict what he has said , keep your **** and bull story to yourself.

No such limitation on those who actually worked together on the ground level on the previous attempt(s) on both Russian and Chinese side.

    Like who?

as to the substance and level of co-operation between China and Russia on this subject that may or may not have happened, specifically or not specifically relating to the current PAK-FA program, that may or may not have started in the early 90s, this can be only a guess to some of us. but not to those who are involved. 🙂
(That’s my best attempt at lawyer talk)

Nice twist at the end but thats not any lawyer speak.Thats the sum total of what you actually know about the matter.:p

let me spell it out for those who are rather … challenged.

Before spelling out anything for anybody you need to understand that since you are the one proposing the aforementioned theory , the onus is upon you to give some evidence in favour of it.In comparison on the other side we have first hand information from a very senior officer of the IAF itself. Its not a difficult choice really.

Now..that logic wasnt too challenging for you to understand , was it??
