It was Ron Harker, Rolls Royce chief test pilot who suggested popping a Merlin in.
He died some years ago with no mention of his contribution to the war effort

Yup, he sure was the man. Read a copy both The Times & The Daily Telegraph obituaries from 1999 here:

Outrageous! Eric Williams deserves better. Excavate, recover and give him a proper resting place with full military honours. Let his family have ‘proper’ closure and a grave to visit.

The two round structures, that have these markers next to them, are the circular one’s seen on the corners on the East side of the building in the centre of the attached.

Dont I get a pat on the back for identifying them as boundary markers then? 🙂

I’m not so sure they’re boundary markers per se, rather, marking the two structures that they’re placed against. I could be wrong though.

I know where. They’re down by the Tower of London. This one is on Tower Hill, just behind the Tower gifte-shoppe-thingy. As to what, I’m not at all sure either, but I may know a man who does know – I’ve asked him…

Spot on! Well done that man. One on each, of two corners of Tower Vaults, next to the Tower of London. I’m led to believe that Tower Vaults are what’s left of a building that was destroyed by a high explosive bomb in 1940. Quite what the structures are I’m not sure, but I have seen similar elsewhere, used for storing water, for fire fighting.

Ordnance survey benchmarks have the same government arrow, but the marker in the photograph isn’t an OS benchmark.

There is no painting on the lef hand side of this structure.
I’m not too sure of the ‘What?’ myself, but obviously know the ‘Where?’
I can tell you that there is an identical structure & marker approx 45.5m away from this one.

Keep the guesses coming, I will reveal the location later this week if not guessed before.

Episode 2 – What a series. What aircraft, what times. Never appreciated what a fine aircraft the Victor was. Need to see one in the air again. Wow!

    TOMMYS LAMENT

I’m a poor British soldier and I’m fighting a war
And each day that passes, I wonder “what for”?
We’re told it’s for ‘Freedom’ and ‘Country’ and ‘King’,
So over the White Cliffs, a Bluebird can sing.

    We’re told to hate Jerry who started this show;
    He’s murdered and maimed, this tyrannical foe;
So we’ve bombed him, we’ve shot him, we’ve burned him with flame
And we’ve done all of this in the King and God’s name!.

And after each battle we search out our dead,
And lay them to rest with a cross at each head.
And were these men ‘ heroes’? no, just ordinary blokes,
Who swore and got drunk and told corny old jokes.

    Fighting for freedom? probably not!
But the wife, and the kids and the vegetable plot,
And a pint at the local and a quick game of darts,
And the love of their kinfolk, in mind and in hearts.

Their bodies lie rotting beneath foreign sod,
But I pray that their souls are now safely with God.
And not just our soldiers, but all innocent chaps
The Jerries, the Eyties, the Yanks and the Japs.

And if that sounds crazy, I’ll tell you full well,
It isn’t those men who should be damned to Hell.
It’s the ‘grey’ politicians who hide behind desks,
Knowing that they won’t be risking their necks.

Sending ‘communiquĂ©s’ in language so fine,
Resulting in statements like “peace in our time!”
Greed, hate and vanity, ambition that’s raw,
Get rid of those and you’ll get rid of war.
So ‘Tommy’ sleeps soundly, for he’s earned his rest,
Don’t ever forget him – he ranks with the best!.

If this is the location in question, there’s nothing the event organisers can do. As long as the ‘spectator’ has not parked his vehicle at this location within the highway boundary, there’s no offence committed.

Pedestrians would be quite within their rights to stand on the grass verge, and ‘admire the view’, so long as they’re not obstructing the highway.

Also, in regard to adjacent ‘private’ fields/land, let’s not forget that ‘trespass’ in itself is a ‘civil’ offence and not a ‘criminal’ offence, so the Police would have no powers.

    Just my thoughts.

Nice to see that they have retained the original Luftwaffe WWII green cable tie, as can be seen in the third photo:)
