At a beautiful National Trust garden near where I live, seeing grandparents and grandchildren at an outdoor picnic table grimly eating lunch under a big umbrella in a howling gale. The English summer can’t be beaten .

Well, you can’t deny that the tunes are virtually identical, but it’s only a small part of the Men at Work song. I always thought ” Kookaburra ” was an ancient traditional Aussie tune,I well remember my daughter and her friends murdering it at Brownies. Incidentally, I’ve always liked the Australian word ” larrikin “. We don’t have a lot of larrikins in Britain these days .

It’s good, isn’t it ? If you like reading biographies, get hold of John Belushi’s. He was an extraordinary character who burnt out far too young .

I’ve read about her in today’s paper, and what struck me was how – well, how can I put this? – ordinary-looking all the husbands were. She’s obviously someone who really can see the beauty within a person, isn’t she ? But there’s a lesson here for everyone, which is never get your partner’s name tatooed on your neck for all to see. It’ll only end in tears .
