Surprised me to learn the origin of a bloke walking on the outside of the pavement.I’d always thought it was so the poor devil could absorb the mud splashes while the Mrs. stayed pristine .

It’s a pity that little gestures acknowledging that women are supposedly (ha!)”the weaker vessel” are now seen as belittling of women’s equal status.Things like letting us through a door first,offering to carry a heavy bag and walking on the outside of the pavement so you can draw your sword easily if attacked don’t cost anything and make the world a pleasanter place.It’s plain good manners.

Or you won’t be getting a shed load of replies Steve !So many points raised you don’t know where to start.Just seems to me that this lack of manners is mainly confined to the younger generation.If a bloke offers me a seat,after looking behind me for the old dear and then realising I’M the old dear,I’m only too grateful !But it’s invariably older guys who do it,young men and women just sit tight.Young women are now so comfortable with their equal status with men they feel happy copying bad behaviour too – you should see our local nightclubs at chucking out time.Incidentally I love the bit about a woman being asked out ” just for the pleasure of her company “.What other reason would there be ?!
