If Pakistan is going to be given more F-16s, with them stating that they’ll be used to strike terrorist camps and the like, I’d think their chances of getting AMRAAM as part of the deal aren’t necessarily set in stone. Terrorist camps aren’t exactly able to be targeted by the AIM-120.

AMRAAM is necessary to bring down hijacked airlines at longer ranges and more effectively. Any way for accurate ground bombing Radar should have ground mapping and SAR mode.

F-16s to be delivered soon: air chief

    By our correspondent

HYDERABAD: Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Kaleem Saadat has said positive indications are coming from the US government in connection with the F-16 fighter planes and, God willing, the planes will be delivered soon.

He was talking to newsmen after the inauguration of a school in Rashidabad near here. Federal Minister Atta-ur-Rehman and Sindh Education Minister Hameeda Khohru accompanied the air chief marshal.

Asked will Pakistan get the F-16 planes, he smiled and replied it was a decision of President Bush and the US government and positive signals are coming. He said the Pakistan Air Force knows how to fight. He added the PAF is ready to shed every drop of its blood for the defence of Pakistan, adding nobody should have any doubts about it.Later, the air chief marshal inaugurated the under-construction work of the school building.

This assumptions prove wrong. There was and is no need to develop MIG-29 when rival companies are developing similar concepts at same time. higher TWR of MIG-29 was achieved at expense of less fuel and less airframe strengthening (just 3000KG weopon load). You can put F-16C engine in F-16A and achieve the same or better TWR(by the time MIG-29 entered production F-16C was in production.). And price wise new MIG-29 is too close to Su-30 to justify its purchase. I think it was freely or cheaply distributed by Soviet Union.

    I believe a Hellenic Mirage-2000 has a confirmed kill against a Turkish F-16.

In peace time it depends on intentions. Active war will give different result.

Or the F-86E/F at the hands of an aircraft that’s difficult to even take seriously – the Gnat!

The ration is not that much that you want to boost any way. There is forced land Gnat example but there is none like F-86

One conflict where Russian equipment comes out on top and it suddenly becomes overinflated? 😀

Proper comparision of MIG-21 is with F-5 not F104 which is a bit earlier generation.

FC-1 – the J-10 is what people really want, people do not want another short legged F-20 wannabe. Even pakistan has stated that it wanted something more.

You are rant against FC-1 is premature. Wait untill it is fully developed and upgraded. and it is of different price range than J-10.

Are they upgrading in Pakistan? Probably the result of Rumsfeld to India. PAF is allowed to have less potent second hand block 15. An no advances weapons (JDAM/AMRAAM). Probably just enough to get the gap filled before the JF17 is good enough to replace it.

JF-17 cannot replace F-16 unless highly upgraded version of JF-17 is developed full of composites and airframe strengthing to carry exteranal 5500KG weopon load and CFT for extended range.
MLU is the best option due price reasons. New F-16 cost around $40 to $50M.
You can pretty much cross out other aircrafts for next 5 years atleast.

    MIG-29, MIG-31.
When another two seat air superiority fighter Su-27 was in development.
You can give MIG-31 benefit because i think it is developed deployed earlier than Su-27 and developed from MIG-25 atleast.
MIG-29 is absolutedly unnecessary. A Single engine fighter based on AL-31 engine was way to go and far more successful in export market.
You can say the same for Mirage F-1. there was no need to develop that one.

ISLAMABAD: Belgium’s refusal to sell second-hand F-16s to Pakistan will not affect ties between the two countries, according to Major General Shaukat Sultan, the military spokesman. Reacting to the Indian Defence minister’s statement in parliament on Wednesday about Belgium’s refusal, Gen Sultan said that Pakistan could purchase weapons and ammunition from any country to cater its defence needs. “Talks go on with several friendly countries in this regard and sometimes it reaches some conclusion and some times another. But it does not affect our ties with them,” he sad. Earlier, Indian Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee informed parliament that Belgium had decided not to sell second-hand nuclear-capable F-16 jets to Pakistan following a request from India. online

    By Khalid Hasan

WASHINGTON: The Indian-American community has begun to lobby hard with Congress and the Bush administration following reports that Pakistan may be getting the F-16 aircraft it has been seeking for so long.

One Indian source with access to the Indian diplomatic presence in this country told this correspondent that the decision to give F-16s to Pakistan – the reported number is 25 – had already been taken and would be announced before long. There is no confirmation of this from Pakistani diplomatic sources which have not been known to be too forthcoming with much information insofar as the Pakistani press based in the capital is concerned. However, the new ambassador Jehangir Karamat has promised to be more forthcoming, but it remains to be seen if his words will match his actions.

A report in the New York-based publication India Abroad says that two Indian-American community stalwarts Dr Krishna Reddy and Dr Sudhir Parikh, who co-chair the Indian Congressional Caucus have begun circulating a “dear colleague” letter through their favourite congressmen on Capitol Hill. Once enough signatures are found, it will be sent to President Bush. Reports say that the F-16s to Pakistan would be over and above the $1.3 billion that Pakistan is to receive by way of the arms it needs. Reports that much of that money will be spent on acquiring a large number of Orion-PC3 surveillance aircraft have not been denied, nor the view that Pakistan’s defence needs do not justify more than two or three of this aircraft. The equipment to be sent to Pakistan is also said to include TWO abti-tank missiles and Phalanx anti-aircraft guns.

The Indian-inspired letter has been co-signed by Rep. Gary Ackerman of New York and Rep. Ileana Ross-Lehtinen of Florida. They hope to have it signed by about 100 of their colleagues. The text says, “We firmly believe that such a sale would undermine our long-term strategic interests in South Asia and urge you not to grant a licence for such a sale.”

After detailing all the assistance and concessions given to Pakistan after 9/11, the two legislators say, “We view economic assistance as necessary to reform Pakistan’s schools, provide maternal and child healthcare programmes, support economic restructuring and otherwise engage in the types of programmes that will stop Pakistan from being a breeding ground for terrorists. Military assistance, however, is another matter.

While early military assistance packages for Pakistan were justified as being in support of Pakistan’s fight against al Qaeda and the Taliban, more recent arms sales have moved further and further away from the requirements of the war on terror.”

Ackerman and Lehtinen write, “The sale of F-16s, a platform with an inherent capability to deliver nuclear weapons, would send a similar message in even stronger and more ominous terms.” They go on to argue that such a sale would “send a clear message to the Government of India that we have made our strategic choice in South Asia, and that choice is Pakistan.”

Congressman Frank Pallone, another known supporter of Indian causes, has said that while it is true that the sale of the F-16s has not been formally announced, “we know that the negotiations are taking place. The bottom line is that the F-16s really are more likely to be used possibly in a war against India than they are in any war against terrorism.” He also believes that the sale will escalate an arms race in South Asia.

I thought the PAF was looking at other radar options for the JF-17 as well?

First 50 JF-17 are using Chinese Radar (down scale size of J-10) and testing begins from next year. Aparently Grifo S-7 has run into develpment problems.(It is derived from Grifo 2000 for F-16MLU). Italian have shown Aspide-2 Active BVR with it. PAF Mirages uses Italian radar so there is no attempt to put MICA on it.
PAF will not ask for French radar unless there is MICA missile.

Not necessarily, they could always clear it with the US first – or perhaps they could simply target areas in the north-west where US control is thin on the ground and local “war-lords” simply do what they want (including supporting Chechen guerillas).

The intended message is to UK(where they have given asylum to Chechen separtist leader) and Georgia of course.

Actually, given the less than stellar grammar used in the news reports, the translations might have been a little off, so who knows.

“It was for the first time that two foreign pilots had flown a prototype aircraft in China.”

Come on, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that the sentence above is anything but good English.

Regardless, we’ll just have to wait and see. If the PAF takes the SD-10, that’s a pretty good indicator that the current BVR theories are BS. There’s no reason for multiple BVR AAMs, pick the best one available and go with it. It’s the Western avionics that apparently have given whatever old jet they’re using a South African BVR capability, and the JF-17 will use Western avionics, so you do the math. If the weapon they supposedly have is any good, then there’s no reason for the SD-10. If it sucks, or they actually haven’t gotten any, then the SD-10 will arrive with the JF-17.

JF-17 radar is Chinese so Chinese missile is foregone conclusion.
South African BVR missile and PGMs are for Mirages who are using Grifo M3 radars. And also for F-16 if AIM-120 does not arrive with it. Also for later JF-17 when and if it is equipped with Grifo S-7.
French avionics are more interms of EW, Communication, navigation systems. Have you seen anything recent in news regarding Radar from France? otherwise MICA would have been in wish list atleast.
PAF believs in 4 or 5 kind of BVRs not on only One. R-27EP is not ruled out either.

Misleading. Early data and late data. A and C are both multirole. MTOW for A is ~12,5 tons and for C is ~13 tons. Data from producer.
MTOW – empty-equipped = payload like every ordinary airliner. The user choose ratio of fuel to weaponsload related to intended mission. 😉

I havent seen 13 Ton Maximu take off wt for Gripen. It is around 14 tons.

There is no relationship between metal airframe and ability to lift weopons. JAS-39A is limited to 3600KG. Only the multi-role JAS-39C can lift 5300KG the same as F-16A.

    This about invisible targeting.

An interesting feature of the radar system is that now an opponent will not know he has been targeted. As a result of lessons learned in previous conflicts, there is no radar pattern or waveform change when the new Mirage locks on or fires at a target. “He doesn’t know if, who, what, when you shot,” Robins said. A data link is included for mid-course updates of missiles in flight.
