”This is very disappointing given that we have a lot of experience about to help avoid these sorts of accidents. When will owners take on board the lessons of the past 30 years?????? ”
That is a very sweeping statement who’s experience are we on about I have met loads of ‘experienced pilots’ some of them are sadly no longer with us.
Anyway to answer your question Reg flew the airtest in Black6 and on his takeoff run the aircraft sank into freshly laid turf covering a recently dug/ filled trench the aircraft prop hit the ground and then he got airbourne. Reg didn’t even know this had happened untill after the flight.
He didn’t fly her again because he was very ill. John Allison flew her from Benson to Duxford not because the grass strip was better, it was because it was decided by MOD that Duxford was the place she was to operate from.
Re accident
Just got back from hols and saw this thread, glad to read the pilot is ok. Yes the damage is a lot worse than Black6, although she had a crushed fuselage, fin and rudder the wings were untouched as was the undercarriage and engine. It is repairable, as is anything, if you have the money.
Does anyone know if Red 7 was landing on a hard runway and ended on the grass or just lost it landing on grass strip. We always operated Black6 off grass.

The chap sat in the Hurricane was Eric ‘Ginger’ Carter he flew Hurri’s with 151 wing in Russia and considering he is in his nineties he had no probs climbing in and out of PZ.
I can’t remember his name but I believe he flew Hurricanes in Russia. Will find out tomorrow. And yes we can fly with other a/c look out for the same pair at Duxford and Biggin Hil
Not wartime 109 pics, but North Weald taken by me from the lanc
Heres a couple of 109s both from IIIJG/77
hope this works
It was on ours, as the shroud concentrated the exhaust to make it more noticeable on that side
Just watched the video clip, and having worked on a Bf109 for the best part of 20yrs and seeing that one crash. I believe that was a very lucky escape!!!!!!
The smoke trail is caused by an exhaust shroud fitted over the port exhaust stubs to prevent the gases going into the supercharger intake. If you look at the video of Black 6 it only comes from the port side
