Ok, so you lot have to help out a Yank who’s not up to snuff on WHICH models of Spitfire saw service in the WWII years…I know the Mk I, the Mk II, IIa, Mk V, Mk VIII, Mk IX…beyond that, while I know some saw combat, I don’t know how high up the variants go…what was the first POST-WAR Spit….would ANYONE in here know about this? 🙂
Mark
The Pr.XIX was in there at the end as has been said, and the XIV certainly saw a good deal of service, with the XVIII just getting into far east squadron service in mid ’45. Going backwards slightly, let’s not forget the XII…. 😉
I knew someone would put forward the Spit, just as I knew Mark12 would come to the rescue! Huzzah!
I think you have two or three separate incidents and two TV programmes confused there, I’m sure someone will straighten them out for you though. There was a programme re the Buckingham palace ramming, the pilot is still alive. I think that’s the incident alluded to in the BoB film where the guy lands in someone’s greenhouse. The TV programme for that incident was not Spitfire Ace (which trained several young pilots on ML407) but a one-off special on Channel 5.
He’s back over DX now. Makes for a hell of a tea break.
Steady on lad, don’t lose hope. You might get laid in the future after all, I wouldn’t call them history yet.
Genius. Just…genius. 😀
Duxford disposing of another exhibit – obviously not ‘Historic’ enough for them as there are, of course, so many ‘A’ models around. 😡
Let’s hope that it is better cared for in its new home than the IWM’s Meteor NF11 WD686 at Muckleburgh. 😡
I’m not going to get into justifying what was a carefully thought out decision to loan the Sabre out, but I would point out that although the fuselage was ‘A’ model, the wings were most certainly not. Did you not notice the painted-on slats?
You were swearing so viciously I thought perhaps you were a madman, and best avoided.
😀
Today saw two Spits (Romain Tr.9 and MH434) doing several flights and one of the Mustangs too. Very distracting!
Interesting find. Tis the Museums Data Organisation’s thesaurus for the RAFM. To be honest I don’t know if it’s used solely by RAFM or by other aviation museums also.
Here’s another clue.
Wind tunnel model at the Science Museum ?
Ah, except its not a preproduction model, as much as I thought it might be. It’s innaccurate for a good reason…
Wind tunnel model at the Science Museum ?
OK, own up. Who googled “spitfire wind tunnel model”?
Hmm, strange cockpit shape and no wing fillets. Some sort of pre-final design Supermarine wind tunnel model?
Yeah, it’s them. “Special Needs” indeed…
Yup, it is indeed a 1/48th scale model by Mick Evans

Looks pretrty good, doesn’t it?But I think the place is real – does it look familiar? Looks British to me
Damn. I thought the tailwheel looked a little…floaty.
Dave, I’m gonna guess and say it’s a model, or a FSM?
Looks like Mr Romain’s plastic Spitfire currently visible (just) from the M11.
[Edit] and that’s Building 63 DX in the background.
