I think it was glycol, although I stand to be corrected on that one!
I seem to remember that Don Kingaby of 92 Sqn expected his engine to expire when glycol got into the cockpit during one combat over the Channel. After landing he found that the windscreen de-icer system had sprung a leak.

Have just returned from a trip to the Aviation Bookshop in Tunbridge Wells and they have a very similar photo (slightly different angle) in their photo basket.
His publisher (Pen and Sword Books) are usually pretty good at forwarding enquiries so if you send them an e-mail I’m sure it will eventually get to him.
