what about as a new heliport on the thames:D
that’s a very nice idea… half museum – half civilian heliport;

Sorry WW, but the F15E can do any mission the US could need including air superiority, albeit not as well as the F22.
The Frenchmen have sent more than 3,000 troops and some of their best equipments (Rafales + AASM, Tigre HAPs, and so on) to the Afghanistan for supporting American military action there, and now what payback they get ?? The USA military commander’s comment of “The outdated army with yesterday’s techonology” ??? What a thanksgiving.
I really think the France should withdraw its “yesterday’s troops” away from the Afghanistan right now, and just let American “tomorrow’s army” do its own job alone.
I agree completely.

Thank you for suggesting I can’t read properly.
LOL. Scorpion82 already answered that but heck, for fun…
No crash; a ditch!
No plane problem on any of the four A/C lost; accidents!
Bad omen only for very myopic seers!
No plane problem on any of the four a/c lost? Where should I read conditional? & how do you know there was no problem on the plane?

Hi Nicolas10, no doubt about that Rafale has a great BVR load anyway, I just was confused about the statement of Kovy, that’s why I asked.
Correct me if I’m wrong please, but isn’t 1 x centerline fuel tank and 6 x AAMs a normal A2A config for Rafale, while 2 x wing fuel tanks are mainly needed in strike roles?
Like this:
All wing stations are free in this config for AAMs and even if we take your example with 2 fuel tanks at the inner wing stations, you can add missiles only at 2 rear fuselage and 2 mid wing stations. That’s what I meant, that adding AMRAAM, or even a new developed BVR missile won’t change anything in regard to the numbers of BVR missiles, unless you can integrate them to the external wing stations.
Imo, even if the there would be a necessity for Rafale to carry 6 BVR missiles (be it with 2000l, or 4000l fuel), you simply need to integrate the CFTs to the get the same result!
Short range:
– 2 x CFTs = 2300l fuel
– 2 x rear fuselage METEOR / AMRAAM / MICA EM
– 4 x wing station METEOR / AMRAAM / MICA EM
– 2 x wingtip MICA IRLong range:
– 2 x CFTs = 2300l fuel
– 1 x centerline 2000l fuel tank
– 2 x rear fuselage Meteor / AMRAAM / MICA EM
– 4 x wing station METEOR / AMRAAM / MICA EM
– 2 x wingtip MICA IRSo why invest into something totally new, when you already have developed and tested CFTs? Not to mention the additional advantages of lower RCS and less drag.
When mica is obsolete, no matter how you look at it, you remove 2 (wingtip), to 4 (wingtip + outer wing) bvraam by replacing them with short range aams.
The total number of missiles doesn’t matter: you loose capability, add this to drag & weight penalty of carrying more missiles;

Well I agree with scorpion that it’s too early to tell if it was a pilot error.
The fact that the pilot brought the plane near the CdG before pulling the chute leads me to believe that it was not a pilot error.
I also agree that blaming 4 crashes on the rafale is very silly as 3 of 4 were known to be pilot errors.
Nic
Can you explain that please? METEOR should be fitted on the rear fuselage and the inner and mid wing station, so 6 too. Also isn’t AMRAAM meant for the same stations as METEOR?
In most cases the inner wing stations are going to be taken by the supersonic fuel tanks in atoa missions.
But quite frankly 8 bvraam is already a great loadout.

Is it truly on offer/sale? If yes, it would be a rather good thing for the IAF to pick up a few high end M2ks.
USS.
It is if (big if) the Uae get the Rafale (and probably if they get the SH too).
Nic
welcome to the club.
the whole MRCA saga is IMO a massive waste especially since due to slow decision making (well not that all of the candidates are completely ready either) the primary objective, that of filling up numbers quickly has long been lost.
we should have bought 120 M2k when we had the time and left it that. once that option was gone there is no justification for this dog and ponny show.
The Uae fleet comes to mind. It would be a very cost-effective stopgap.

This swing wing lightning is utterly ugly!
I can’t see why India doesn’t simply buy some additional aircrafts from Russia, then get Tejas and PAK-FA and be over with it. Why introduce yet another type and possibly different technology.
haha just what I was saying, I think India is paying for the ToT. It’s probably their last massive fighter purchase from the west.
Nic
aspis, I think the point for gripen NG doesn’t really make sense in the case of India. The case for a cheapish light fighter would be better served by buying more Su30 and quite a few more Tejas, then you’re saving money by rationalising your airforce. Integrate brahmos on the Su30 fleet for penetration mission and purchase storm shadows for the Mirage fleet just in case.
Nic
Radars are so passé!
http://www.flightglobal.com/blogs/the-dewline/2010/06/photo-rafale-defeats-f-22.html
I think Gripen NG lacks in range as far as strikes in China are concerned, so would the SH, but I don’t know about the F16IN.
Rafale can strike more than 1000 NM away, and you could even add CFT, for less draggy profile, more weapons, or even bigger range. With buddy/buddy refueling it means you can strike targets very far without vulnerable air tankers. aasm and scalp allows safer standoff strike. Purchase the reco-NG and IMO you get the best multirole platform out there IMO.
What I would like to know is if Brahmos would fit under a Rafale. This would be quite a sight if it could be integrated! (maybe sell a few to the MN, puhlease?).
Su30 MKI and later Pak Fa will excel at air superiority, and swarms of Tejas will take care of point defense and close range strike, so what you want is a versatile aircraft with good deep penetration capabilities. Thats the Rafale in a nutshell. I forgot to say that it is the safer purchase, because it will be the sole strike fighter of the French forces for decades. So it will be kept upgraded and relevant for a long time.
Too bad politics will make the SH win it.

b) Can the Rafale fire missiles in BVR without any radio emissions? I know that it can do so WVR with the use of a LRF, and perhaps a Gripen like triangulation is possible via multiple Rafales. However, can it do this singlehandedly with the combination of sensors that it has (OSF/Spectra) and the Mica IIR?
Thanks.
USS.
Well it definately can fire a Mica thanks to link16. Whether it can do so with just Spectra I don’t know.
If the Mica IIR has a contact, then of course it can be fired.
