A Buccaneer-style rotating fairing would be no less complicated or heavy, or have any less impact on aerodynamics or RCS, than the system in the F-22. Either way, the correct long term solution is a LOAL missile so that the doors can be opened only for as long as it takes to fire the missile. This is largely why the AIM-9X has not been a priority to date, since the initial Block 1 AIM-9X is LOBL only and so does not bring a huge capability difference on the F-22.

I think it would be good to have a LOBL mode because the F22 has no IRST, so the missile would bring one more sensor to the Raptor.

Anyway, in Dogfight TWR is utmost important as well as flying clean since drag of the external weapons makes you lose more energy. Here the F22 has the advantage.

Now the drawback of the F22 is that it doesn’t have a dogfight missile. Nor LOBL capability which could come in handy to pull a quick shot compared to firing an AMRAAM.

If it were me I would make a special weapon bay for AIM9X. It would be extremely easy to make and use with rail launch a AIM9X: put a panel that can rotate on iself and expose a sidewinder that’s mounted on a normal rail pylon à la F8 crusader. The panel would need to be symetrical so the only difference when it’s “open” would be the added pylon and 9X that would be external. When you need stealth you fly with the 9X inside, when you df you fly with the 9X outside, with it’s seeker adding as an additional sensor for the plane. I don’t know if I’m making myself clear. The panel should flip like the ID panel on James Bond’s cars, only one side would be empty and the other side would carry a winder. That way you could fly around with a 9X or any IR missile without flying with a bay open (drag + RCS penalty).

With an edge to the F22. After all it remained undefeated while still downing 1 Rafale. I think TV + TWR might give it an edge; but with 90KN engines in the Rafale that may change.

Thanks to ONE person who has been trolling every rafale thread lately. Do I need to name him? You can’t read a thread where the Rafale is mentionned without stumbling on his trolling.

Might as well invest in a S400 batterie rather than have a short ranged stealth fighter. Or even develop stealth cruise SAMs, say by replacing the warhead in a stom sshadow by two asraams capable of attacking a pair of intruders.
