The production chain of the Mirage 2000 has been closed because the IAF didn’t decide to purchase it soon enough.

Well I wish France offered to take back all of Greece’s Mirage 2000s to sell Rafales, and then upgrade them all to 2000-9 standard and deliver them with the UAE Mirages to India as MRCA, as it was proposed from the very beginning. Then india would just have to upgrade its existing fleet to the same standard, to obtain a very powerful force, much cheaper than introducing a new plane like the F16, and benefting from existing infrastructure and experience. With a good provision of Mica, AASM and storm shadows and coupled with the Su30s, those would form a pretty potent backbone for the IAF, to be complemented by tejas Mk2 soon as it is ready to replace bison and other fighters.

Mate, I think you underestimate the Mirage 2000-9. The only thing that it would give to the F16IN would be an AESA radar, but the RDY-2 is MORE than enough for the striker role believe me. If you want a multi role plane then the Rafale is a safer bet, but for an attack plane the Mirage 2000 is top notch, and uses a wide range of ammunition, from Scalp/storm shadow to AASM to the use of US GBUs and even israeli GBUs…

Besides the support infrastructure is already in place and very recent 2000-9 can be obtained from the UAE and maybe greece to make up the numbers, for cheaper than brand new F16s. The 2000-5/9 comes avaiable with a HMS by the way, which coupled with the Mica IR proves as deadly as the AIM9X, and also adds a bvr capability!

F16IN, while I believe is a better AC than the Super Hornet, thanks to a less draggy airframe, and porbably a more interesting industrial package (if you consider moving the production line to india), isn’t the best bang for the buck of the competitors. Keep in mind that it is still an overweight evolution of a 30 year old design, especially when you consider that you are always going to operate with conformal tanks, which will reduce TWR and drag even more.

So while I believe it’s a very capable aircraft, it is not up to par with competitors like Eurofighter, Rafale or Gripen NG.

Now if india is only looking for a strike aircraft with little dogfight capability, then be my guest. Anyway a HMS + AIM9X will make up for a big part of the lost agility, but it won’t bring much more than what the indian mirage 2000 updated to dash 5 or 9 standard bring to the table.

That was back in time when whe were playing some videogames like “Falcon”, “F-19 Stealth Fighter”, “Fighter Bomber” or “F-15 Strike Eagle II”… Good ol’time…

I’ve spent so much time on Falcon I, II & III and F16 combat pilot from DID.

F117A Nighthawk from microprose (ex F-19 stealth fighter) was so easy! I remember I just couldn’t find a mission I could not finish with ease, even at the most hard settings. I remember coming to my uncle who was bragging about his pilot’s score, and I did best his most points in a mission on my first flight in the game…

BTW the F16 was not the first plane to offer datalink capability either. The swedish fighters had those quite early.

Its a very old and inaccurate drawing, probably trying to show what you could put on a Rafale in the very early phase.

For instance MN Rafales carry 1 exocet on the centerline hardpoint, and this loadout is not even described here. GBU 12 can also be carried on triple launcher on the middle wing point, and they don’t even mention the AASM.

That said I suppose it is possible provided such an ET exists in the first place, which isn’t the case yet.

LOO CLOSLEY AT THE PICTURE;
1.this air show was done in 1989 in al-muthana aiport in central baghdad i was there
2.saddam walking with the commander of the military industry next to him and the guy pointing is hussien kamal his son in law and minister of industry then

3. look at the falcon the nose cone is to change how the plane looks like and they named it somthing else i even dont remember what

4. all this for show the plane never flew with that thing on it

5. those 2 falcons were target towing falcons infact back in 1987 i fired matra magic A/A which was wired to my Mig-25 on a target towed by one of them in the western desert off H3

the article I pointed by général A. Sadik & T. Cooper clearly state the plane was indeed equipped with Mirage F1 radar, and use to fire exocets on at least a couple occasions while disguised in commercial flight. It is said IIRC that it’s that plane that hit USS Stark, and that it stop its exocet attacks just after because it was not supposed to exist and iraq didn’t want to answer US questions.

Maybe the falcon 50 were then used for target towing?

Hyperion good points about the explaination of the rafale visits.

As for the second part, you should understand that I’m more interested in debunking greg’s silly claims than to tell you which plane HAF should purchase.

Seing a Rafale in aegean ghost scheme surely isn’t a good reason for Greece to purchase Rafales is it?
