The Ark is currently in Rosyth up in Scotland being prepared for her refit due to start early next year. I think the Ark has had some maintanance done down in Portsmouth the past year or so, but up in Rosyth they are adding a third mast to provide state of the art satellite and radio systems.
I am also led to believe they are renovating the flight deck to better suit the joint force harrier’s and also the apache (though I was informed by a Navy AET they are ditching the idea of the apache on ships because it would be a nightmare to maintain in sea conditions, with the salt water etc i’m not sure how true this is. Any takers?)
Theres no way you could get an aircraft carrier down that river, it’d be a tight fit for a WW2 motor torpedo boat, the river tends to twist quite a lot and with a lot of arched bridges, unless the Governments reduction of the MoD budget has meant the aircraft carrier is now 1/100th scale
Hahaha 😀 with recent cut backs you would probably believe the carriers were 1/100th scale.
I found a map view of Durham and like you say, theres certainly no way a carrier could fit down it.
For anyone interested HMS Invincible is docking up in Newcastle on the River Tyne (Tyne Commissioner’s Quay). That solves the Durham question
Correct me if i’m wrong, but isn’t Durham inland? At least it was last time i went there earlier this year
Yeah I was thinking the same thing, just checked royal navy site and it definitely says Durham, there is a river I think that runs through it, big enough for an aircraft carrier im not sure

Hi guys,
Lusty has successfully finished her sea trials just in time for the Trafalgar celebrations at Portsmouth last month but it might be her. However I know Invincible is visiting her affiliated town of Durham to celebrate her 25th Anniversary in service this month (not sure on a precise date, hence it still could be Lusty) I would put my money on it being Invincible though
21 mate, thought the navy is considering a new plan to have two rotational crews on them, meaning that each ship will have 42 people serving on them. IMHO I don’t think this will happen mainly because the navy is having problems recruiting people, as is the whole ADF. Many young people are realising that there is more money to be made in the private sector.
Thanks for that. Crikey did not realise there was problems with recruitment for the ADF. Here in Britain I know the navy is quite desperate as well, the RAF are getting rid of people, and the Army need people as always. From my personal experience the RAF was not too interested in me cause of they are down sizing, but the Navy, christ!, they nearly ripped my arm off 😮 😉 Sorry for going off topic slightly there.
Back on topic, I read somewhere HMAS Canberra is being decomissioned this year, 24 years service. Whats going to happen to her once shes decomissioned? Will she be sold on or scrapped? Thanks
No, the corners of the hangar door on Esbern Snare are not rounded like that. I’m thinking JMSDF auxiliary or test ship.
Ahaa I see 😮
I see where you are coming from with the JMSDF ships, the hangars do look very similar.
Just off the top of my head what about AOS 5201 Hibiki? Though I doubt it as the side railings are very close to the hangar door and Hibiki’s flight deck is big.
Could it be a picture of one of the hangar doors on the HDMS Esbern Snare? Abit of a long shot.
Very Nice pictures!! Love the inverted Apache, stunning! 🙂
Superb!! Fantastic pictures all round 😀 The Mig-29 camo looks great IMO.
Wow, NUSHIP Armidale is a great looking ship. How many crew does the ship accommodate?
Fantastic pictures!! The good old Jag, a great aircraft 🙂 . Will be sad to see her go when the time comes….
Its bloody addictive! 😉
Yeah 😮 and great fun!! 😀

Ahhhaa thats how its done!! Thanks i’ve been trying for a while to get rid of the default traffic, cheers 😀
I saw the Icelandair DC-3 perform at Duxford yesterday, absolutely superb, no joke, one of my favourite displays, definitely threw it about alot more than the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight DC-3, it was excellant. Not looking too bad either
