Hi Steve
I don’t know if this was taken at Farnborough but it is VN 799 in flight in 1949

EE Canberra book
Hi Steve
Your forthcoming book is a great idea. I was an aircraft electrician in the RAF from 1953 until 1958 working on canberras exclusively. I was stationed at Wyton. Westonzoyland, Gibralter and Hemswell. I worked on B1s, B2s, and PR7s. Our main task was high level air sampling following the many atom bomb tests taking place around the world at that time.
Willing to help if I can have an email address.

El Adem in the 50s
Hi Nitro
You stirred a memory.
I flew into El Adem in Sept. 1957 to repair a stranded Canberra B2 I was a cpl elect fitter. During my 3 day stay I visited Tobruk which in those days was much as Rommel had left it! I srolled through the sand dunes to a lovely beach for a swim only to find that I had walked through an uncleared WW2 minefield. I was rescued by an army bomb disposal landrover. Happy days.

Hi Alan
As Iv’e said before I worked for Aviation Traders in hanger 1 from 1959 until 1961 as an electrical fitter on the Britannias, Tudors, and DC4s.
I would like a sight of those photos, Privately if you like, to see if I can identify any old fellow workers for Freddie Laker.

Yorks at Stanstead
Hi Old Shuck and Keith.
Late reply as I have been away.
Yes I well remember those Yorks that carried the rhesus monkeys. You could smell them from 50 yards! Some of them were actually converted back for passengers. I started with Aviation Traders in 1959 to service the “new” Bristol Britannias, worked at Stanstead hanger 1 and also at Southend for Air Charter on the old Bristol freighters and the Convairs.
I left in 1961 to work for the Royal Aircraft Establishment so I probably just missed you. I was an electrical fitter.
Here is an old pic I took in Gibralter in the 1950s

I well remember Yorks flying into stansted in the late 50s loaded with monkeys to manufacture Salk vacine against polio. How times change!!

I seem to remember Dan Air flying Yorks from Stansted in 1959/60 when I was working for Aviation Traders

VN799
Beaut of a shot there, Paddy, but not from the 13th May – there were no real in flight pics taken on that day, and the fin has been squared-off, so it’s from one of the following flights. Not that I’m being nit-picky or anything, and anything VN799 is right up my alley.
🙂

Thanks for the info. The picture comes from the the booklet produced for the 50th anniversary of the canberra. Although only 16 pages long it is packed with pictures and data concerning the design and construction. I picked my copy up in an old bookshop. Have you seen a copy?

And finally
Here’s the prototype VN 799 13th May 1949

Welcome to the Forum Sunderland 1944
Your web site is great, especially as I could recognise all your area pictures.
I was born and raised on the shores of Lough Erne during WW2.
I have signed you guest book already.
Best wishes. Your site is a fitting memorial.
