The way the lighting is on some days, it should be called the Sod Hall… :highly_amused:

Yes, with any access to the interiors of RAFM aircraft not allowed anymore, any interior fit is irrelevant. The Wellington is known, by far, as a bomber, and is a very significant part of Bomber Command’s history; to have a Wellington and not represent the bomber boys is an insult.

Agreed re the BBMF markings policy, they’ve always had that spot on in my opinion.

Tricky re the Wellington…be true to the actual aircraft, or true to the type? I think I’d have to err on the side of bomber look though- it’s just too big a part of the Wellington’s history.

Use parts from DR306 and LS931 as patterns for creating new parts needed for DP872, but leave their original material to be dealt with later,

That’s the thing- the aim is to build a Barracuda that is as near as possible made from 100% original Barracuda material. Even missing parts, we are fabricating to the drawings from scrap skins and the like, but it’s all Barracuda. So whatever we have available will be used in the ‘mix’- that is why I was personally pondering the issue of final identity.

Our Bill reports in that he called in at the Fleet Air Arm Museum today to catch up with our friends there and the look again at their Barracuda parts. While the original recovered aircraft was DP872- from the Irish bog- and that was brought out with the blessing of the family at the time with a view to the aircraft being rebuilt to honour the men, it seems that there is actually just as much if not more of DR306 from Whernside…and LS931…and so on. Looking stupidly far ahead, one idly wonders what identity the finsihed aircraft should have? When one airframe is built from the substantial remains of several, do you go by percentage, or..?

So, standard camouflage scheme and different serials on each side, perhaps? Or go with the original 1970s wishes of the relatives at the time and build ‘DP872’, no matter what?

Just idly throwing it out there- what do you think?

While I don’t like the current state of Sugar’s black paint- it’s not wartime or original effect, it’s just wrong- I do agree with what Mark says about the ‘Airfix’ effect- something that always strikes me when I see ‘Just Jane’ as it happens.

Years ago I got a lot of pictures of when Sugar had her port outer wing removed, to allow some airframes in and out of the doorway behind her; being able to see into her wing structure, and look at removed panels close up and so on, THEN you could see how old she is. I recall that her removed engine was virtually bright red, it had so much preservative sprayed over it!

The paint on the port bomb bay door and the port undercarrige doors dates from the early 2000’s. I should know, I painted them! There was corrosion control required.

There’s more new black gone onto her since, extending up the fuselage sides and around the markings. The two tone effect- from memory, the newer stuff is more matt- looks horrible.

Of course, it’s unlikely that much of what sits in Hendon is what was originally built as R5868 by Avro- she had at least one major rebuild and several sections swapped out during the war- but she’s still the airframe that finished the war, of course. She was pretty much a gutted shell at one point, but is in better fettle now for internal fit and as Mark said, she’s had a few repaints in her post-war life, and in my opinion, could do with another one now- the black patches on her that have been repainted in more recent times stand out like a sore thumb and look awful now.

A little bit of an old thread bump here just to say that we’ve updated the look of the Bluebird Project website. The address is the same, just follow the link in my signature. 😎

Both wings off and the tail about to follow, but better than I was expecting, I must say.

    Aw, that’s a shame.

Thanks for the input then guys- we seem OK for drawings, it’s stuff like photos and manuals that I’m after.
