‘XH558 had no idea that it’s Mini Me had snuck out for the day’.
When I bought a polo shirt from the Vulcan stand, I wondered how much they’d paid to have their fancy carrier bags printed, and that they could have said they weren’t giving bags, or were re-using supermarket carriers, to save money for the flying. But then I thought that the ‘brand’ exposure could be deemed just as important, or that maybe the bags had been sponsored for free anyway.
I guess you can see too much into things sometimes!
We’re actually able to use the disabled parking too if we wish, but decided not to mess about on our way in- wish we had now then!
Ellie and I went after all, my first airshow in several years. Got there about 8am and drove straight in, no problems. Had a nice morning walking around all the hanger displays and stalls etc, and enjoyed Cossie’s new Cold War building- very nice indeed. Spent a fortune on a lovely leather jacket from the RAF Museum shop. Back to the car for nibbles, and I was amazed at the amount of garden furniture some people were setting up by their cars, and of course by the extent of the windbreaks and tents on the flight line- selfish ******s!
We set ourselves up a little ways back from the flight line, at the right hand end of the runway adjacent to Spit AR213 and Hurricane R4118, so I could watch them start up and taxi out, which I enjoyed immensely. Loved seeing the BBMF, especially of course my beloved Lanc. The cloud base was very low- the Falcons went around a couple of times in the Chinook, and only jumped on the third go, and even then it felt like they were chancing it! The Reds did their ‘flat’ display, but it was still a nice sight, as was everything really- have been reading many comments elsewhere from the ‘pros’ who were bemoaning the gloom etc, but as a family day out, it was still great.
Had no illusions that the Vulcan would be there, but it was nice to hear such a buzz about it over the base, and I bunged a few quid it’s way by buying one of their nice polo shirts.
Getting out wasn’t so good though- we sat in the car for an hour and barely moved! Traffic was okay once we eventually cleared the base, though.
‘Cloud’ I can live with, it’s ‘dry’ I want!
*quietly removes Metcheck from ‘favourites’ and hopes no one will notice*
Yeah? Ooh! Where do you get your info then Mark? I was looking at the ‘Metcheck’ website, which is currently showing rain for a lot of the day. (Though it’s varied between rainy and cloudy with practically every update they do, it’s driving me nuts!)
I’m hoping to attend, but the weather isn’t looking too good right now…
I’ll say ‘thank you’ for the praise as the only ‘member of the team’ on here, though my own part in it all is very small and I’m in no way worthy of being counted with the guys who are weilding the hammer son her. (Though I’ve recently completed the new cockpit seat, with the headrest to do next)
I can’t speak for the boat being ‘open’, being as I am several hundred miles away and not involved with her on a daily basis. That said, she’s in a small-ish workshop that is packed with bits and pieces of her, to say nothing of her new engine, and room- and time- for visitors is at a premium. I know for sure that photography became an issue- now casual visitors are asked to not take pictures, as pictures of the progress etc are for now the project’s main ‘currency’ when it comes to dealing with sponsors and giving interviews etc. Best just follow the progress on the project’s website, and wait for the old girl to break cover, I’d say!
The ‘Speedline’ models are regularly available on Ebay for £25 plus postage from the guy that makes them- just search for ‘Campbell Bluebird’ and you’ll almost certainly find one. Being a low detail vacform, I’ve never bothered with one personally.
Yup, that’s what Steve said!
The tailfin was added and was purpose designed for CN7,
Well, I’d certainly buy a copy! Maybe Fluffy will be along later and might elaborate on the decision not to do one for the Hurri?
I think Fluffy has previously said that there were no plans for a Hurricane one, but that there would be one for another aircraft he’d worked on,which manyof us took to maybe mean Black 6?
Thinking about it, a Hurricane one, in the format these books are, would be rather similar to the Spitfire one.
And the book is available everywhere, all good bookshops and really bad ones too, etc!
BBC News also reports that the Spit, Lanc etc are from 617 Squadron!
Hey, nice photo! I was sure something like that might be done- too good a chance to miss, really.
I’m surprised we’ve not had a Lanc – Vulcan on the ground together photo op while they had the chance?
