Which type of blackbird is that a B or a titanium goose ?

There was only a couple of 2 seaters with raised cockpits built.

    Nice pics though.

It’s an SR71-B. There was only one built in this configuration. The titanium goose was really an A-12B.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I’ve been visiting the Air Zoo on and off for a good number of years. My brother has done occasional research for them – was involved in the paint scheme for the F7F, so I have a special place in my heart for that lovely big bird. Wish I could have seen it fly.

I was also disappointed not to see the Cliff Robertson Spitfire there too – but understand it’d been away for some time now.

There are a number of interesting autos and motorcycles tucked into vaious corners of the museum.

Thought you might like to see a few more pics as well.

    Hi Dave,

I watched the Rocketeer recently as well. Nice “get-lost-in-the-story” adventure.

As to the Gee Bee (Z Model), the replica used by Disney in the movie was purchased from Bill Turner in the USA. It’s not quite accurate – longer fuselage (by two feet) and wings (by 3 feet) and less powerful engine (by 85 HP). It was built in the late 70’s and now sits in a museum in Santa Monica, California. (info pulled from a bunch of websites)

For the crash, it seems most likely that a mock-up was used, as I’ve read a number of references in movie blooper sites to a cable pulling the plane being visible in the movie just before the crash. Will have to watch more closely next time.

    Cheers,

Every one of the southern 48 states in the USA has a town called Springfield.

    Not Connecticut!
