You don’t have to look too far to find other vintage airframes at risk of destruction.////// but there does seem to be the attitude that a rotten airframe is worth restoring whereas a neglected one is not. Case in point the Catalina at Weston that was scrapped only back in 2012.

I quite agree. It must be the thrill of the chase.

The tiger stuck in the zoo is a lot less compelling than the one at large in the bush. There is a derelict WW2 bomber 10 miles up the road from me, 15 minutes from the M.25, but nobody has felt the need to do a thing with it for years.

A tragic conclusion to this thread.

Herve Da Silva lost his life in the aeroplane which he restored, a few weeks ago

This from the International Auster Club facebook page. (4,10 2014)

It is with great sadness that I have just heard about the tragic death of Herve Da Silva a French Auster member and personal friend. From what I know, Herve was taking off from his home base Moret in his Auster and crashed shortly after take off in a field. Herve was fanacatical about Austers and was a great help to me when I started my restoration. My thoughts are with his wife Sandrine, his family and friends.

    RIP mon ami..

To remove the sense of mystery-

Perhaps paint one side in RAF colours – I am not entirely joking actually.

The RAN Sea fury wore Dutch colours on one side, I think, so there is a precedent.

Let joy be unconfined ! It’s a start, and the gesture is appreciated.

    From WLAC today-

    ”Breaking News……………

In keeping with the spirit of the Festive Season we have reduced the price of Avgas to £1.90 for the month of December.

    Let’s go flying!

    Kind regards,

    WLAC Operations”

So they are faking cover pictures now? Wow, that’s desperate!

If you want to see a Fortress in RAF colours you will need to go to PNG !

Re the current FlyPast, they have succeeded in messing around (over printing with copy, etc) with almost all the air/air photography apart from the Dibbs Lanc/Vulcan pair. If only they could leave at least a few alone. When it come to such self-conscious design, less is more.

I am reminded of a pithy expression by ‘Winkle’ Brown in some TV prog – ”Suddenly, the brakes came on ! ”

Wasn’t the B17, Blenheim, Mosquito formation 1987. One of the Blenheim’s few appearances
before it’s first crash? She didn’t fly again until 95. The Mossie was lost in 96.

It was 87 of course. I scrambled the date for some reason

It did not have time for may appearances, Biggin, Church Fenton (I think) Denham obviously, maybe a few others.

I was shocked to witness the Denham incident, and to see it was going to go very wrong about 10 seconds before it stuffed in. I remember seeing the starboard wing arc through the air as it cartwheeled. I took this photo as the Lanc thundered low overhead, hence the people looking up.

That shot is at Studland Bay, from where it operated various charters in 1977.

There is is photo here of the other one VH-BRC beached at Calshot (says caption) just across the estuary from Lee on Solent

I think it is fair to say this is lower than the driver intended. It was a loop, which ran out of sky. USA, some years ago.

    He got away with it.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see a formation including Lancaster, Mosquito and Blenheim etc…

I think they did that at Biggin in ”89, with the Fortress also. All my photos are in deep storage I am afraid..
