The first ‘cockpit’ has landed, but it is singularly lacking in instrumentation, if anyone can help. It’s Doctor Who’s Tardis. I was also disappointed to discover it is the same size on the inside as it is on the outside. However, one of the prizes in the 1st September raffle will be the chance to drive a Dalek, and you don’t get that chance every day. The ‘second’ prize will be a helicopter flight.
A table and space duly booked for you, Ian.
No, Balliol, the Overstrand will not be there, despite our best efforts, which included finding it a secure home at Halfpenny Green, it has gone in store at Cosford, from where it is hard to see it emerging.
No.1046 Sqd ATC will be bringing their Chipmunk cockpit, the one that used to be at Lichfield Squadron. It is complete except for seats. So if anyone knows of a pair of Chippie seats they would be very interested to hear of them, or even to see them on 1st Sept. Apparently they will be running a raffle where the prizes include a flight in a Cessna 172 and a flight in a helicopter, but I don’t know which helicopter.
One of the cockpits booked in is the Clutton Fred G-BMOO. Actually a full fuselage, this is fitted with Ron Webster’s remarkable Whirlwind radial. Ron designed the 7 cylinder engine, and built it in his garden shed ! It is fitted to the Fred for convenience, and Ron will be running it during the day.
The booked in cockpits now include Hunter, Harrier, Anson, Chipmunk, Balliol, and Defiant, as well as a number of hanger displays. We shall be getting the whole of WestBeach’s hanger, so there should be plenty of room.
It might or might not be an attraction but there will be an invasion of Daleks during the day, and at least one Doctor Who in his Tardis. There will also be a rally of Turner sports cars from Wolverhampton Airport to Wolverhampton Airport, that is from Pendeford where they were made to Halfpenny Green, to a building identical to the one used as the Turner factory in the 1950s
Ah, XV499, I missed that thread. If it is to be gate guardian at Air & Ground it will replace the plastic Spitfire, which was sold. Don’t rule out the Phantom appearing for sale at some point. By the way they are listing a Harrier cockpit/simulator at the moment, for £9000
The local ATC Squadron, 1046, are hoping to bring their Chipmunk cockpit as well. I fear that they may have converted it into a simulator, however. We shall see,
Is Halfpenny Green more synonymous with the Avro Anson than any other ? During the War it was filled with the Ansons of No.3 (O) AFU, then when it re-opened during the Korean nastiness in 1950, the Ansons returned once more, until it closed a second time in 1953. In the late Sixties, a Company called Tipper Air Transport bought eight ex-RAF Anson C.19s, and parked them at Halfpenny Green looking for civil buyers, without much success. Two of these actually survive, VL348 at Newark and the cockpit of VP519 owned and beautifully restored by Alan Hulme and Iain Forster In addition the Air Scouts had Anson VM325 for many years. The Air Scouts are still there, and will be helping again during CockpitsWest, to earn funds, so we are happy that an Anson will be returning for the day, Mike Davey’s ambitious cockpit restoration, which was one of the stars of Cockpitfest.
You are welcome again at CockpitsWest at Halfpenny Green on 1st September, AM, free stalls, and inside the hangar or out, for more room.
Here’s something no=one has yet thought about, Cosford already has the aircraft that shot the Dornier down, Defiant L7005, or at least a FSM of that aircraft, or at least the Defiant which has a one in three chance of having shot it down. L7005 was flown by Sgts Thorn and Barker on that day, and they claimed 2 of the six Dorneirs claimed by No.264 Sqd. in that action, and were then in turn hit in the coolant system by a Bf.109, which Barker also shot down as Thorn was force-landing. L7005 was the top scoring Defiant, its various crews claimed 12.5 victories, which is why the Boulton Paul Association chose to paint their FSM as that particular aircraft. It is now in store at Cosford, dismantled. What an incentive they have to place it on display next to the Dornier
Thinking about this, is XW434 one of the Jet Art JP5s ?, If so it seems extraordinary that it went from Cosford to Selby and has now come back to within 10 miles of Cosford !
The battle to get the Overstrand to Cockpitfest has been lost. The Boulton Paul Association have had their way, and it has gone to Cosford. There is a separate fight going on their to get it on public display for the Air Show.
StART will therefore be bringing a Defiant cockpit project.
The decision has already been made, N3378 is going to the RAF Museum. I would suspect it will go on a shelf at RAF Stafford, so it will be indoors, gathering dust. As I personally collected every part of it, from all over the country, including six tramps to the top of Bleaklow Moor, I am not at all happy about it, but there’s nothing I can do.
I would like to say that the wreckage of N3378 is carefully packed up to go to Cosford, but in fact it’s literally in a heap on the floor of the main factory, but then many in BPA only think of it as scrap metal anyway. Some if it actually came from the RAF Museum when they had a clear out at Cardington, now it’s being give back to them.
The Night Fighter Preservation Team’s engine and prop have been returned to them, and I would like to personally thank Alan Hague for the loan of that.
pm me, and I will let you know when we are there, which we usually are every Sunday.
The Defiant/Balliol/P.6 FSMs, and Hunter T.7 cockpit, all owned by the Boulton Paul Association, are packed and ready to be loaded on 24th, for shipment to Cosford on 28th. The Overstrand cockpit FSM is still at Halfpenny Green in Westbeech’s hangar, but the committee have apparently refused Westbeech’s offer to house it for free, and want it to go to Cosford as well, or rather a couple of the committee have.
The Grasshoppers are at Baxterley.
