    I guess I am at heart an Atlanticist and not a European. What you need to ask, is how many other Brits feel the same? In my opinion, a simple majority.

    Mongu; Of course you are free to feel more conected with one part of the world of other, but I would like to make some remarks. The UK is Europe, has an European identity in the way people perceives things, have an european history and european costumes. The problem is that there´s a continously stubborness in drawing a line with the continent. A common language doesn´t bring a common identity, and the US resambles the UK as much as Spain resambles to Peru, that´t to say…nothing. The real problem with the UK; country I know quite well, is that it has a problem of identity. You have had a inmese empire and now have to match with the problem that many other countries are as important as the UK. For this reason, folkoric elements tend to be use to determine a false different identity such as the currency, driving on the left, imperial and so on. But if you go to the basic there are not much differences between someone living in Berlin or London. The real reason is that many british people have fear to the unknow and reject everything they don´t want to understand, feeling that only negative aspects come from the other side of the continent. And please don´t interpret that as a reproach to your country, which I really admire.

    Excellent post, Sauron.

    The US should intervine in conflicts and war when asked by the UN. I am against the unilateral approach, created by the current US advisors, which says….we are the world, we do whatever we feel like. In the First Gulf War there was a wide consensus and Security Council resolution. In the Tutsis and Hutus issue I blame the whole world for ignoring it and not doing it. The EU and the US should share their responsibility.

    Nobody cares, only africans there and no petrol. If the Tutsis massacres were largerly ignored by everyone (both Europe and the US) why now?. Hundreds of regional conflicts are forgotten by all of us.

    Sorry, but I can’t believe you’re bemoaning the looting of a museum when the newly liberated are happily expressing their contempt for any type of society by looting and destroying hospitals. As to culture, do you really think the mobs currently marauding various liberated cities give a toss about culture?

    Regards,

    I know they care a fig to preserve their own history and culture. Everything looted can be replaced, except lives and art. I have also heard that some incunable and ancient documents have been taken from the national library. I am not surprised about the looting, but the lack of protection by coalition forces to some places, and the protection of other than the airport, the Ministry of Oil, Saddam palaces………

    Kabir, I was going to say the same thing. Mr Branson, More respect to the grand flying lady. I don´t enjoy some of your theatrical shows. Not this time. The Concorde retirement is something too sad to make oportunistic comments.:mad:

    Mongu;
    It´s not a critic but a matter of personal tastes. Don´t worry other european chocolates are as bad as Cadbury. And I am using the word “bad” as a personal oppinion of a product which is a fake and a adulteration of the real chocalate handicrafts. And also a cheat to consumers. And I suppose It´s not a question of nationalities bashing. Italian do the same, in Spain some brads, most of the german brands too.

    Sauron;

    Of course not proved, but there are too many evidences against the tank driver. More than 100 journalists who where taking pictures, many of them from the US media, declared that there weren´t shoots. But just image the situation. A hotel which wasn´t a militar target, and a tank looking ahead to the battle, so the Hotel was out of his sight……if there weren´t shoots (I suppose he was concentrated on the fire ahead), why he decided to turn round to check if at 500 a camara might look like a granade propeller?. In a silent situation would make the tank driver to heard a bang, but under fire…..Too suspicious for me. Besides, too many contradictary versions coming from the allied press conferences. Changing minute by minute. In any case, this won´t be investigated, our submiss goverment won´t ask for responsabilities to the allied force.
