The top set of images most definitely shows a FLANKER, but you’re right, the object in the bottom could easily be an F-15. The wing trailing edge looks straight to me, implying that it’s probably not a FULCRUM.

Watched Cloverfield. The hand-held aspect was actually done pretty well. I’d like to see a sequel (which they clearly have in mind if you watched the making the monster featurette). I felt that the movie itself was forcibly toned-down. Add JJ Abrams and crew to the list of Hollywood sellouts sacrificing quality and realism in order to get a PG-13 rating. Come on, people. This was New York City. There is absolutely no way in hell that people aren’t at the very least going to be dropping the f-bomb because of a gigantoid monster trashing the place 😀 Any movie supposed to be a horror movie that isn’t rated R has something wrong with it in my opinion.

There is an SA-6 unit based just south of Dayr az Zawr to the southeast. They could have been moved to the site if it was felt they were needed, but then you’d still be left with SAM systems in a new position leading to questions as to why they were there.

As to the MiG-29s. Could the USA keep MiG-29s flying? I’d think so. You’d need a source of spares, and a bunch of maintenance documentation, preferably supplied by trained personnel who can aid you in learning how to maintain certain systems. The question would be whether or not these things could have been made available to the USA. What you need is a foreign supplier, going on the assumption that Russia wouldn’t be too keen on doing it. The question is then whether or not such a nation existed.
