When RAF Driffield (East Yorkshire) closed, the first thing I did was telephone the local council. Weeks later I became the proud owner of an RAF Driffield road sign. I decided to donate it to the local ATC squadron, which is still based on part of the camp.

Just out of interest what steps were taken to re-home the C1Ks with museums, both in the UK and abroad? I know the VC10 is BIG but…

I’m not a happy bunny, but know that we are not talking Hunter or Lightning…

For insurance purposes it would be good to see two C1Ks preserved – perhaps one as gate guardian to RAF Brize Norton? But I guess that has already been considered.

Can someone confirm what is to be preserved? I still think that more than one C1K should be preserved, but they aren’t exactly small.

The opening sequence to The Way to the Stars, filmed at RAF Catterick. Probably how a lot of people feel about these old airfields – very romantic overtones.

Also the opening sequence to Reach for the Sky, with Avro 504 E3404. Nothing is more moving that the simplicity of a grass landing field and proper aeroplanes…

Appointment in London (RAF Upwood) – in some respects better than The Dam Busters. Scenes in and around the hangars.

The tail wheel was a big part of its success, allowing it to operate from unimproved runways, getting the cargo door closer to the ground for easier loading/unloading without equipment, and so on.

    true…

The only thing to replace a DC-3 is another DC-3!

Agreed, and if the DC3 was designed and fitted with tricycle undercarriage from the start, I would imagine they would still be building them today!!!

    Well done Tim!!!

The aircraft was indeed a Basler BT-67 and I suspect it was C-FTGI:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basler_BT-67

The Basler BT-67 is a fixed-wing aircraft produced by Basler Turbo Conversions of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. It is built on a retrofitted Douglas DC-3 airframe, with modifications designed to improve the DC-3’s serviceable lifetime. The conversion includes fitting the airframe with Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-67R turboprop engines, lengthening the fuselage, strengthening the airframe, upgrading the avionics, and making modifications to the wings’ leading edge and wing tip.

It was the wing tips that threw me…

Where would Hendon put them? And could they afford the lightbulbs to illuminate them?

    Regards,

    kev35

Obviously they couldn’t take everything, but the BE2 and a few tanks would look great in the GW hangar. There is space at Hendon (not much, admittedly).

How many C1Ks remain airworthy? And what are their retirement dates? I’d like to see one flying before it’s too late!!!

I wish another C1K could be preserved. Any suggestions or perhaps another long walk is in order?
