In front of the GANDER sign is 4X-FPN on 11 August 1973.
In front of the control tower on 31 July 1973 is 4X-FPM which was ex-Minnesota Air Guard and the serial appears to be 0-30365.

N92034

Still has the Swedish target tow gear.
Baugher had 91726 with Evergreen, McMinnville, OR as N5260V on display at Air Venture Museum. Then with Mid America. Now with Mike Rawson. No RN serial listed. 91723 was RN XB384.
I was an air controller in Gander and they were already flying Cherokees across the Atlantic when I got there in February 1968.

I took this crummy photo in Gander on 28 April 1974 at 7pm just to remember one night’s traffic.
They all will be heading out over the Atlantic in the morning.
Three RAF C-130s, a Saudi C-130, the local Nordair ice patrol Electra, two Senecas, an Arrow and two Cherokees going to France. The little guys were probably going via the Azores.
It is a “model” that the Shearwater Aviation Museum in Nova Scotia, Canada takes around to airshows, Navy Days and parades to promote the museum.
Sam is long gone.
He let me copy his photos probably 35 years ago.
It is on my photobucket site.

Ex-Royal Canadian Navy Walrus aircraft Z1781 and then Kenting Aviation survey aircraft CF-GKA. The aircraft was doing survey work in Newfoundland & Labrador when it went U/S. They figured there would be no parts available for this one-of-a-kind aircraft and so no need to save it. Sam Blandford turned it into a houseboat on Gander Lake, Newfoundland before they learned that the stores section at what is now CFB Shearwater had plenty of brand new engines still in their packing crates. The Gander photos are Sam Blandfords. He did tell me what happened to the fuselage but I do not remember after 30 years.
By the way, in the original post it should be 743 FRU.
XM605 starting to taxi out at Gander, Newfoundland.
A snapshot from the control tower on 24 August 1972.
Britannia is 489, Atlantic 61+14 and DC-3 CF-RTY.
Over by the tree line is an E.P.A. Carvair.
The hangars there are WWII Royal Air Force.

The blue tail is Nordair Electra CF-NAY based here on ice patrol.
The Thrush Commanders were heading across to the Azores as was the Navajo.

DC-3 CF-RTY belonging to Eastern Provincial Airways of Gander.

Transports and Maritime aircraft.
In the early 1970s there were RAF Transport aircraft over-nighting at Gander Airport almost every day. Shown here on June 16th. 1973 are Britannia XL637, Canadair Argus 740 & 733, Canso CF-CRP and DC-86 N8633.

I have a 55 Sq. cloth patch that was flown on Victor XL191 to Shearwater Naval Air Station in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada for the 1985 airshow.
Will trade for the book Achtung! Swordfish! I have a piece of fabric, map light and other bits from one of the Swordfish that were maintained here in WW II for the Merchant Aircraft Carriers and figure it is time I got the book on 836 Squadron. I plan to use the map light as a chart light on my sailboat but have not got around to hooking (Pun intended.) it up yet.
XE390 before coming to North America.
When I used Google to try and find where XE390 was now I did find some history. In 1961 it was at Lee painted as an Admiral’s Barge. In 1965 it is shown in a photo at Hurn in the all-black scheme with the FRU. It is reported as retiring from the FRU at Hurn in February 1969 and was the last Seahawk employed there.
