According to Spitfire a Complete Fighting History the top speeds for various later marks were as follows:

XVIII 442
XIX 460
XXI 454
XXII 454
XXIV 454

yeah thought so,…but thought 470mph+ could be just a little too fast, in a dive maybe though :confused:

Don’t really like the P-51H, though. Doesn’t look like a Mustang, even though it is one!!! :rolleyes:

That Aussie built Mustang look-alike that Stormbird posted a while ago was pretty damn ugly and looks like this too.. 😀

hmmm,…I would have gathered that the late model Griffon ones would be all out at 430-440 mph…

I have to say the replicas are getting better and better at present.
If you put a 5-bladed prop on that Spitfire and took the photo from a little bit further away then you would be hard pressed to tell it from a real one.

Also that P-51 is damn good too 🙂

Thanks for the pics, SB 262.
From what I recall reading, the Sperrin was intended as a Valiant replacement if it didn’t work out, if I am correct. But the Valiant was put into service, albeit with a fatigue-shortened life.
