I read the link and it quotes “The X-6 was intended to test the practicality of nuclear reactors as large bomber propulsion units”
“The X-6 never got beyond the early design stage, no prototypes or mockups were constructed”
So granted I got it slightly wrong, it wasn’t going to power the B-36 itself, but was going to be for a large bomber (which I guess at that time was the B-36 or even the early B-52).

While on the subject of alternative powerplants, I read once about a propsal of a nuclear powered B-36 Peacemaker.
I know that they got as far as a running nuclear reactor onboard but it never went through.
mmm,..wonder how practical it would have been. They had to line the B-36 with lead for shielding

So that emergency prop feather switch is completely non-standard. If so, good on them for having the foresight to fit that. Would save a multi-million dollar (euro) irreplaceable aircraft me thinks…:)

The other advantage is the zero torque reaction from having both props spinning in opposite directions, cancelling out the twisting motion. Very desirable in 2000hp+ carrier launched aircraft like the Seafire FR.47.
Interesting listening to the Jack Stafford at Wanaka talking about take off in the Tempest.
Full opposite rudder trim and then rudder just to keep it in the right direction when accelerating down the runway !!!
C.R. Props would have sorted that.
I guess the other drawback is the added complexity of the gearbox and prop-shafts for this setup.
As if it wasn’t already complicated by the massive complexity (and sometimes unreliability !!) of the Napier Sabre !!!

Even if it was true, the thing that scared me the most was steam power being used to drive the turrets. Imagine a stray bullet puncturing a steam line and boiling hot water vapour going through the fuselage…mmm…no thanks !!!:eek:

Surely the Halifax, for all it’s strength wouldn’t survive breaking sound barrier and also being able to pull out at 600mph too.
Also being heavy than the standard Halibag but being able to fly much higher and faster ?
Too many inconsistencies.
Another thing was the tongue-in-cheek way the author described how they heated their lunch on the boiler.
Sorta giveaway really.
