Just to pick up on one of your points – surely before the war there would have been thousands of small engineering businesses all over the country – those being the days when we made things ourselves. Isn’t the opposite true now? We have a few large engineering concerns and relatively few specialist manufacturers, but that is all, isn’t it?

My grandfather always had on old “inkwell” of blue, red and green ink on his desk. And of course Churchill always notoriously used red ink when First Lord of the Admiralty.
