Well that’s a very telling phrase. So what would be better?

Not many of the Asians I know have been able to laugh the abuse off so readily.

Integration of course! Of course we can only speak from personal experience – mine is at least first hand whereas yours is second hand.

I would imagine that the majority of posters on thread are white males, average age 40s or 50s, working/middle class and therefore unlikely to have been on the receiving end of much racial abuse in their time. I know some who have and it isn’t nice. The use of words and language are powerful weapons these days.
I think within some there is a desire to actually be offensive in the interests of “historical accuracy”.

If in order to tell a story of bravery and ingenuity a trivial fact has to be changed – so what?

It won’t be the only factual error in the movie I bet.

Interestingly I have spent a large part of my working life amongst some black but a great many Asians. The majority have, on the rare occasions it has happened when I have been with them, laughed it off and I have been abused by being in their company. People who abuse in that manner are small minded, unintelligent and not worth bothering with. The use of words and language are only as powerful as society allows them to be and the problem is that our ghastly multicultural society has exacerbated the problem.

If PC means not offending other folks or not using language that might offend then I’m all for it. Being rude and offensive to others is nothing to be proud of.

But that’s the whole problem. People can be offended by almost anything! It6 is a ridiculous sensitivity which used rarely to be aq feature of social interaction. Now it’s the norm. I can honestly say that I don’t think I have ever been offended by anything in the nearly 70 years of my life.

The onus should be on people not taking offence.

And I’d put money on the film either being both dreadful and a money loser, if it is ever made, which I doubt.

That way this debate becomes irrelevant.

I think the best solution would be to not make the film at all. It would have to have considerable production value to have any point which would make it extremely expensive and I remain unconvinced that it would make its money back. And unless there is a 99% certainty of that it will not get the investment – Peter Jackson or not. Anyway he’s got two Hobbits to worry about first.

As someone else said – I’ve got the DVD of the original and still enjoy it despite all the dramatic license.

I respected him as a mod and a member of the forum, as I do most of my fellow members, but other than that I have no personal knowledge of him at all.

I remember Yes Minister, but had no idea the others were also broadcast on radio. How successful were they?
