When I was at school we were taught that the main ethos that lies behind the EU is the interdependency of nations; a system where we help each other when things go wrong to avoid ending up in the situation that caused the two worst conflicts in human history. As this has been the most peaceful half century in European history I would say the basic idea of that is working.

Personally I would sooner live in a country that helps others out, rather than one that spends that same money on munitions. Am I the only one?

I don’t know, but I don’t think that many people seriously think there would have been another European conflict post 1945 if there had been no EU. In any case it was simply a common trading market for years before the structures for pseudo-federalism were put in place.

We bought our first house, a two bed Victorian terrace, in 1966 for £4,500 which in today’s money is about £ 63,000. That house was last sold in 2006 for £432,000!!! Even taking account of falling house prices in the last 3 or 4 years that is still some increase!

It infuriates me that we are scraping around to shave money from expenditure related to the defence of the realm, but shelling billions out to a bunch of losers in Europe just because they made the wrong decisions about their economic and fiscal status. And because our previous Chancellor signed on the dotted line 1 day before leaving office.!!!:mad:

Except that I have no yearning at all to have those days back……;);)They are just good, bad and often funny memories. Neither, I presume, would you want to return to £9.00 per week apprenticeships!:)

So, about £230 per week against Lincoln’s £9.00 per week in today’s money! Blimey it was slave labour!!

Linc – the laundry I referred to parted company with me after I had put the small shirts on the large ironer and the large shirts on the small ironer added to the fact that I set the spin dryer on max rpm which resulted in it demounting itself and crashing into the single cavity wall and demolishing part of it. Again no pay!!:(

That would be interesting to know……………I used to do holiday jobs, like loads of youngsters – everything from working at Bertram Mills Circus to watering chrysanthemums, operating automatic ironers in a laundry and odd-jobbing in a saw mill. My mother removed from the latter after 3 days!! It was always no more than a few pence a day….b ut I enjoyed the experiences!:)

So, that’s about £9.00 per week in today’s money. I wonder what an apprentice gets now (if there are any apprentices!!) – any ideas?
