Very nostalgic – 1950 was my first Farnborough! Thanks.:)

Years ago I worked with an ex-Fleet Air Arm pilot, whose name is forgotten in the mists of time, but who ran a documentary film company and had a lower leg amputation.

We can bleat and shout and yell and complain but I have no doubt that there is some truth in what Nachtjad says.

I don’t think most of us realise just how parlous our finances are and how fragile our chances of fiscal survival are unless we make massive cuts in expenditure across the board.

If we are being honest there should be no sacred cows and I include the NHS in that.

So, sad though it is I would not be surprised if the BBMF ceased to exist in its present form.:(

I agree with everything you say.

The tragedy is that I don’t think the government really has the slightest interest in iconic symbols representing what we do do well or did do well, particularly if they are military.

If a way can be found of “privatising” both the BBMF and the Red Arrows, it will be and for the financial reasons you so succinctly described.

Farlam and Kev – many thanks, I will start digging and let you know how I get on. And, Kev, yes they both survived.

Possibly, but presumably it also shows the squadron letters on the aircraft, if you know the squadron then you get other options.

Unfortunately not, Jimbo, that would have made life much easier. The Lanc is head-on with the entire squadron personnel in front of it and behind it and on the wings! But thanks for the thought. And as Kev said it is sadly easier to find people if they did not survive the war, so I have not made much progress so far.

In response to Kev and Jimbo this is the photograph. I hope this works as it is my first attempt at attaching a file. On the reverse of the photo is simply written “Lancaster E-Easy 1943”

In my experience much of central and local government is a disgrace. Our taxes are wasted, by being ineptly managed and wastefully spent. The employees are overpaid for the work they do and look forward to a nice copper bottomed pension when they retire.

Before the anguished cries of protest, yes, there are good apples amongst the bad but you struggle to find them.

How observant of you. There are two distinct circles, but it is difficult to see what they are but I have also noticed the letter “N” above the circles.

May be cold and may be wet but those photos are “wetting” my appetite for a planned first visit to Duxford for my grandson at half-term. And I have not been for ages so am looking forward to seeing it almost as a fresh experience.:D

skyhigh: Why do you say the Lanc is coded “E” when it appears to be “N”? Is there something written on the back or elsewhere that shows “E”?
There is a Lancaster forum and I’m sure they will have this or similar Sqaudron poses and someone could recognise which one…. Was there a Guinness Book of Records for how many you could get on a Lanc without the u/c giving way? Looks as if there’s a heavier load than a Grand Slam on her!!

Thanks Icare9 but as I mentioned earlier the text on the back of the photo refers to the aircraft being E-Easy, but I don’t know who wrote it or how accurate it might be. But I’ll certainly try the Lancaster forum.

B 36, with apologies if I have missed an earlier reference.
