Lincoln 7 – the day the BBC reposnds to its listeners views is the day the day hell freezes over.

Although having said that I was agreeably surprised to read today that in response to a deluge of complaints from viewers about the incessant and loud music accompanying Brian Cox’s new series the music ism to be toned down and the general levels of background music in documentaries is to be reviewed. I have had to switch off David Attenborough because of the invasive musical background. It is as though we are all unable to concentrate on facts without continuous bl***dy music behind everything. Musak is our lives.

But this is a long way from local radio about which, no one seems much moved, with the honourable exception of Twin Otter.:)

Presumably you feel the same way about Brit expats who buy homes in Spain, France and Italy and resolutely refuse to learn the local lingo and expect all the local tradesmen, etc, to speak English?

Don’t tell me they don’t exist. I work with two of them. :p

I most certainly do, having made the effort myself. I respect the Brits who have gone abroad to live who have made the effort but have no sympathy for those who do not. Unfortunately the Brits have always expected “foreigners” to speak English, and most do. So the effort is not required. That doesn’t mean it should not be made and in my experience knowledge of the language of the country you are in adds to the pleasure of being there.

Sorry to bump this but it seems although the forum may not be representative the lack of response might indicate that fewer people than I thought do care about local radio. I am wondering why it’s acceptable to spend £800 million moving chunks of its operation to Manchester, for no cogent reason, but not acceptable to provide local broadcasting. I rarely listen but always thought it provided a good service and one which the BBC ought to be providing.
