Well, of course, the words are academic and judges do not have to sentence in those terms because we no longer hang people for capital offences and have not done so for 50 years, for the reasons we have been debating in this thread.

So we have come full circle in a way and although the topic is “hot”, as you entitled it we have come through relatively unscathed but I don’t see that any more discussion is going to achieve anything, so I’ll leave it there…..for now. No doubt it will reappear as these subjects tend to in the forum.:)

Perhaps the fact that he had a camera says something about the cyclist.

If you are going to hang a man the words have to be “Beyond ANY doubt whatsoever”. Nothing less could be morally or legally acceptable.

As a regular cyclist, a question occurs to me, which is perhaps naive in the circumstances, but why do cyclists have/need cameras? I don’t think the possibility of needing one has ever crossed my mind and I have been cycling for more than 60 years!!

Well, exactly – this is the point I was trying to make. Some posters seem to think it as some kind of holy grail.

Precisely and where there is a scintilla of doubt you cannot hang a man, however strong other evidence might seem to be.

Apart from Robbo’s examples there are also many cyclists who show a total disregard for those on foot, riding over pedestrian crossings while people are in the process of crossing. And then there are all those who ignore red lights and one-way signs. I firmly believe that a greater percentage of cyclists break the law than of motorists.

I used to cycle a lot and I could be very hot-headed and intolerant of others myself, but I would never break the rules of the road – it’s just not safe for anyone.

Every cyclist who rides on the pavement, however courteously, is breaking the law, of course.

i live round the corner from him only had one encounter he was shouting and cursing at kids because they took his picture on a mobile phone as he was going into a local restraunt at the end of my sisters street

so not someone i’d particularly like to meet

I agree and I think he’s probably better at sitcom than stand up.
