I am not fortunate enough to see warbirds so frequently that I can be blase about specific displays. Whatever is on offer I’ll see when I get the chance and whether or not the Horsemen appear at Duxford, with or without their aircraft, I will be there anyway.

Almost certainly something to do with ‘elf’n’safety and hospital visitors not being insured or some such twaddle……:)

From reading the background the object is to break the sound barrier at an altitude where the atmosphere is thin/non existent so removing the problems encountered when freefalling at lower altitudes (terminal velocity etc).

Once he hits thicker air he’ll slow to the more sedate speeds encountered by everyday freefall…

Yes, of course, that makes sense – I don’t think I’d enjoy hitting the “thicker air” at Mach 1 – ouch!!

” ……as I recall was the Nev Duke world record holder,…..” Mike Lithgow was the Swift record holder and Duke the Hunter…..could it have been a better plane or was its moderate success inevitable. I would like to see one “in the flesh” again after so many years.

I have always thought that there is a freefall terminal velocity for an average human being of about 150mph, depending on local atmospheric conditions. This is clearly not the case otherwise this mission would be irrelevant but I would like to understand why.
