Always to be taken with some care but Wikipedia seems to have a pretty good definition of it:

Political correctness (adjectivally, politically correct; both forms commonly abbreviated to PC) is a term which denotes language, ideas, policies, and behavior seen as seeking to minimize social and institutional offense in occupational, gender, racial, cultural, sexual orientation, religious belief, disability, and age-related contexts.

Symon makes a fair point for those who are regular watchers and Moggy is unlikely to be for the reasons he has made quite clear. However his point is also fair in that the 5th Gear presenters are professional drivers, which none of the TG trio are. If I watch 5th Gear it is to discover more about the cars they are presenting – I do not watch TG for that reason, but for all the other reasons already mentioned in the thread. And no, Moggy, you can never get too much political correctness bashing!:)

I was agreeably surprised after getting bored with the predictability of Little Britain. But there are some good characters here and if the writing stays sharp and the pair don’t descend into self-indulgence, it could become very watchable. I enjoyed the David Walliams’ character holding up the “dog is Dead” card at the window as he couldn’t bring himself to tell the passenger the truth. And the pilots whose marriage was saved after the wife re-trained as a pilot, and they continue to live out the stale marriage on the flight deck.

I cannot comment on your initial comparison, not having seen that programme for many years but speaking for myself, I am under no illusion as to the intellectual depth of Top Gear! I am sure that most of its fans take it at face value as well, and the show’s protagonists would be appalled to think it was taken seriously.

I think it only works because James May is but one of three. They are all completely different in nature and character but share the pleasure of cars and motorsport in general combined with the chance to relive their adolescence. Remove one of the three and it wouldn’t work as well.

And so the irony is that Tiff Needell, of 5th Gear, was the “Stig” for Danny Boyle’s lap!!

I think it is black or white with TG – you either love it or loathe it. Upwards of 7 or 8 million seem to fall into the first category, as do I, which leaves about 40 million plus TV adult watchers who do not.
