I cannot support my own usage with any statistics but throughout my “aviation life” until relatively recently the pilot’s “office” was the cockpit. My sense is that I became more used to flight deck with the americanisation of the descriptions. Although your quotation disproves that theory. Even in US parlance flight deck does not describe the “office” in a fast jet, does it?

Interflug – “Surely the question that the American government should be asking itself is why these seemingly disgruntled personnel are repeatedly passing on this kind of material to outside organisations.” – and to find them and kick them out of the military immediately with the accompanying permanent stain on their record…….

And we are all contributing to the daily pufffing of a story which doesn’t deserve it. After all, what have actually learned in thousands of leaked diplomatic documents that we either didn’t already know, couldn’t have guessed at and are not surprised by?

    It’s another media field day!

All very sad and particularly for one, among many, who have watched the development of this truly iconic aircraft from the P1127 at Farnborogh about 50 years ago to its demise from the RAF this week.:(

A point of information concerning your first sentence. How do we know how he is being held inside Wandsworth?

In answer to BB – neither. He is certainly no hero in any definition of the word I understand. As for a public menace – I think that is ascribing to him far more than he deserves. He is an irritation, little more.

Spellbound, eh? Well, each to his own – personally I have found 90% of what we have read rather unsurprising and pedestrian.

I think the problem here is that the EMA was introduced because the school leaving age was raised to 18. Previously, 16 year olds could enter the jobs market, now they have to stay on, whether their families can afford it or not.

But that is incorrect, isn’t it? There is a PROPOSAL to raise the leaving age to 18 in 2013, but it is not enshrined in law, so far as I am aware.

Many thanks for that. I had hoped to get there when it opened to visitors but was unable to so I will really make the effort next year – it is a fascinating project.

Exactly. It sums up the whole problem in a nutshell.

There is a misconception about what is “free”. Nothing is free, because someone pays. In the case of government provided services we the taxpayers pay for it.

If the government has not got sufficient money because it cannot raise enough in taxers or because it has run up massive debts, which have to be reduced, then people have to subsidise some services.

The truth is that the explosion in universities and university courses was based solely on the Labour government’s message that everyone should be able to go to “university ” to study, anything, for three years, to attain a degree, many of which were not worth the paper they were written on.

It made a mockery of what a university education used to mean. It should be for the brightest and intellectually most capable 6th formers to go on to to try to attain a meaningful degree.

A return to the system of elite universities and high quality technical colleges should be at he forefront of the current government’s higher education policy. But, of course, it will never happen.

And as for the scum who caused havoc this week they should be made to may for the damage they caused as well as be made to clean it up.
