Baz – if this was an option I would be interested – with some reservations. But it isn’t an option. We have gone way beyond that, so now we only have the two options left – out or in.

Could it be that the EU is actually honest about these things when they happen whilst other organisations bury them..
Selective use of information is very powerful in influencing people..Alternatively it could just be that people are jealous of other countries who get more from the EU than they put in, at least monetarily; then maybe those people should be addressing their concerns to their own representatives or organisations that seem to not be doing a very good job of delivering on their behalf rather than blaming the EU as a whole.

I am in the latter camp, you in the former. I don’t buy in to your arguments nor you into mine so we might as well have a bit of fun on the way.
On a serious note I would comment that corruption is rife across Europe and particularly in the Med belt. But I don’t think there are many who doubt the degree of corruption in Brussels and its hinterland particularly as there has been so much effort to try to deal with the problem, within the Commission. The sheer size of its bureaucracy, which grows like Topsy, encourages corruption!
Anyway, cheer up, our net contribution to the EU this year will be £6.5 billion, only 120% up on last year so I’m sure we can afford it! :diablo:

He died,and she starved to death.I spent last night sleeping on the floor of my church hall with four decent people who would otherwise have been sleeping outside because our local homeless shelter is full.
This is the 21st century.

Lots, but I am sure the downgrading of the importance of the famuily unit is key. There is much more familial care in other countries than there is here. I am not saying that this woild have prevented this tragedy because I don’t have all the facts but it might have played a part.
We have become so inured to the idea that the state is the be-all and the end-all that we have been weened off a sense of individual responsibility for others as well as ourselves – with honourable exceptions of course, of which you are one, Bumble.:)
I can only hope that a new government will re-awaken some of the “old values” we have lost. But I am not holding my breath.:(

I think the numbers have been increasing exponentially as each new member has joined. At this rate it has been calculated that the numbers of liars, fiddlers and milkers will actually reach 7 figures by the end of the decade.:rolleyes:
