A polarizer is also useful in cutting down unwanted reflections, eg sun glinting of canopies. Best thing to do is just try it in as many different positions and see what the results are like. At least with a digital you can get instant feedback, and you’re not using up film on test shots. Just go out and have some fun!

I’m still looking for the original reference, but from memory the French concluded that the He162 was a pleasant enough aircraft to fly, in the hands of an expert, but uncompetitive as a fighter. Can anyone produce chapter and verse on this one?

There’s a spine-chilling thread (or couple of threads) on this on PPRuNe. You just grieve so much for the people involved…

Some of those Russian machine’s have been around since Adam was a lad

Or since Pontius was a pilot? (OK, it’s an old one, but so what?)

😮 Whats the saying,if it looks right, well that really does’nt look it to me.

Quite agree, but there were plenty of real aircraft of that vintage that looked even less “right”. Just about any pre-war French bomber, for example. There was an ugly aircraft thread not too long ago – have a look for some real dogs there…

In general terms, there’s some commonsense stuff here that might put some people’s minds at rest (and send others into incontrollable paranoia!)

Some of the links are particularly informative.

Its a case of get what you can …..and go with it. Hope you like what we are trying to do here…. log onto http://www.huey.co.uk and tell us what you think!

Love the sound track! Even No 1 son, who is 16 with no interest in aviation whatsoever (where did I go wrong?), declared it “really cool”. Maybe there’s hope for him yet.

There’s also Sputnik 1, launched on October 4 1957. Even though I was just 5at the time, I twiddled the family radio in the hope of picking up the bleeps from above. The Liverpool Echo carried the memorable headline “Russian satellite is 500 miles above Crosby” – nothing like getting the local angle!

Thanks for that Bager1968. The information you give certainly reinforces what has always been my belief, ie that such F-111K components as could be used were incorporated into USAF machines, but that nothing that could realistically be called a complete F-111K was flown in any shape or form.
On this forum (or, indeed, any other) it’s always best to check the facts before posting, which is why I was a bit tentative as I didn’t have chapter and verse available.

At the risk of drifting slightly off-topic, can anyone settle for once and for all the fate of the partly-completed F-111Ks?

There seem to be at least three versions of events:

    1) The two TF-111Ks were flown as experimental YF-111As, and the rest finished as FB-111s.

    2) As above, only the YF-111As were completed but never flown.

    3) The whole lot were scrapped, as there were too many detail differences with USAF-spec F-111s, although smaller components may have crept into USAF machines. One source has it that an outer wing was used to repair a damaged F-111E.

    Somone must know for certain?

The good news is that after dismantling the Smartbase and removing the drinking straw my sons had hidden in it, IT WORKS again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know the feeling. Our old VCR was never the same again after our then-toddler daughter fed a banana into it. The TV repair man said it wasn’t the first he had seen like that….

Whoops! I’ve just re-read the question and realised you were looking for a three-in-one scanner/printer/copier.
To be honest I don’t know whether there are any of the multi-purpose machines that do the lot plus slides and negs too – I’ve just had a trawl through the Canon, Epson and Hewlet-Packard sites and can’t see anything. Anyone else know better?

    CKing,

It depends on what you want to do with your scanned slides and negatives. If it’s for posting on the web on forums like this, then a mid-range flat bed scanner with a slide and negative attachment will do the job perfectly well. I use an Epson 2480 which cost me about £65 a couple of years back, and I’m very happy with it as an all-round machine. If you want to PM me with your email address I can send you some sample images.
On the other hand, if you want scans of professional quality, then among the flat beds there seems to be a choice of three: the Canon 9950F, the Epson 4990 or the Epson V700. Shop around and the 9950F and the 4990 come in at about the £250/£260 level, with the V700 at £350-plus.
Run the names through Google and you should find plenty of reviews. From the descriptions I’ve read (and I’m thinking of buying one myself, which is why I’ve got the info at my fingertips) they come very close indeed to dedicated film scanners in the quality if scans and, of course, they are far more versatile. As far as the specification goes, there seems to be very little between the Canon and the cheaper Epson.
Canon have now dropped dedicated film scanners from their range in the belief that the 9950F will fill the gap.

Hope this is some food for thought,

    William
