~Boinks Bigglesworth on the head with the empty gin bottle~ How did you know I enjoyed a nice large g & t earlier this evening?!? :p (Ok, much earlier this evening, long before the Jacob’s Creek Chardonnay, the Jacob’s Creek Grenache Shiraz, the sparkling Jacob’s Creek Chardonnay and the substantial Malibu and cokes…(ooh Essex-girly I know on the m & c, but I don’t care :p))
I have just remembered a 7×5 postcard that has been lurking around in the bottom of one of the many trays on my desk at work which is pretty similar to one of Biggleworth’s pics, I will have to see if I can dig it out on Monday, scan it and post it here…

Ah b******! There is not only an Ashley@yahoo already, but a Miss Ashley too! (For those of you who don’t already know, my “on-line moniker” is a shortened version of Miss Ashley II…when surfing the net one day, I came across a picture of Miss Ashley II, a P-51 used for racing in the 1980s, and liked the name….a long time ago, on another chat site, I registered the name “Miss Ashley”. When I registered here, I shortened it to “Ashley” as Ashley is an androgenous (sp?!?) name, and I did not want other members making assumptions about my knowledge/interests, based on my gender. Sounds silly now, given the number of genuine friends I have made here, but hey!
And I bet I’m the only one in this thread so far who likes anchovies on their pizza…

Snapper…I thought she was an ‘F’ until I did a search, and various websites have her listed as a ‘G’…which either means they’re talking out their ***** or we’re barking…
And Hardy’s Shiraz is good…never ever had a bad bottle of Aussie wine…Californian on the other hand…I swear all variants of Blossom Hill are pure evil in liquid form…

~Looking at the locations of the current three forum members in this thread~…is there really not that much to do round Cambridge or something? :p
Seriously though, I do look forward to seeing this thread develop, I am positive there are some of you out there with some good pics and tales to tell…

Trumper…is this post just out of interest to see what other folks here have on the film, or are you doing some research on the making of the film? I ask not because I’m nosey, but I remember reading an article in ‘Just Jane’s’ hanger at East Kirkby about the making of ‘Memphis Belle’, and the demise of one of the aircraft involved…it is certainly good reading so next time you head up to E.K, take a gander!

Totally shocked. Just cannot believe the news. I knew he was not well but did not expect this. I met him through organising the January get-together and thought he was a brilliant, funny and intelligent guy. The last time I spoke to him was back in the summer when he phoned me to drop a hint that the new ‘Battle of Britain’ DVD release was highly likely to include ‘The Battle for the Battle of Britain’, the little seen documentary on the making of the Battle of Britain film…of which there were only a handful of copies made (I believe four, one of which Robert had been given by Hamish Macaddie, sorry if spelling/name is wrong, I hope you will forgive me if it is, and one with the IWM at Duxford) He was so keen for the documentary to be included on the DVD, and quite rightly so, and was so please that MGM had finally got the hint and said yes. He thought I might like to know so I could drop a hint on this forum for those of you who are interested.
I just can’t believe it. Robert’s gone. Only a few months back I was stood in Robert’s hallway talking to him and his wife Joyce about PA474, the Battle of Britain film, the Museum, and A1 at Stamford of all things!
Sorry I’m waffling here, I just cannot believe it. My thoughts go out to his wife Joyce, and his family, friends and colleagues at Keypublishing.
Tonight I raise my glass to you Robert, thanks to you, I will always remember to look out for MH434’s aerial in the ‘Battle of Britain’ now…

Mark…if the film is made from nitrate stock I would advise that you store it in a cool place e.g. garage until you can bring it to the Museum as nitrate film is highly flammable…acetate is much safer although it does deteriorate quicker than nitrate film does, hence a move towards polyester film stock in recent years (hope this makes sense, I’m typing in a hurry, just wanted to answer your question before my meeting!)

Mark12…I will see what I can do (I will get back to you asap)

P.S. Do you know what type of film it is? I presume acetate?
First time I’ve read this thread (yes, most slack of me, must try harder to keep up :p) and it has been most interesting reading.
To me, something that is iconic is a symbol of something or someone. For example, Spitfires and Hurricanes are iconic to me as a symbol of the Battle of Britain – I see a Spit or Hurri and I remember all those young men who took to the skies in defence of Britain and never returned. Therefore, my iconic aircraft are ones that I look at and think “that reminds me of such and such, or I associate that with such and such, or so and so flew such an aircraft”. Does this make sense?
So, my list of iconic aircraft:
Spitfire
Hurricane
Mosquito
Lancaster
Lysander
TSR.2
Me262
Meteor
Harrier
Concorde
Bell X1
Hunter
Vulcan
Comet
Typhoon (the spanking Hawker version, not that new noisy new-fangled thingy)
B2
York
I am sure some of you will throw your hands up in horror at some of my choices and others amongst you will be thinking “but what about such and such”, but this is MY list…the aircraft that are iconic to ME, not the aircraft I think are iconic in general 🙂
