What happened to the one that used to be down in Mapua?
i appreciate they did it in their spare time but there are a/c that have been beautifully restored by volunteers that look fantastic.
A crooked, upside down fin flash is quite a small faux pas wouldn’t you say? Compared to say, using it as a range target?
With a refueling stop in Holland? 😀
As for scruffy markings, given the attrition and time constraints I doubt the Erks were all that precious at the time.
Two battered looking Bristol Hercules.
Fluffy – I think we are in a similar position to the EN224 -until someone says yes I have have and intend to rebuild her there isnt anything to talk about!
Most people of my age I guess have a certain admiration for Raymond Baxter-
hopefully when she reappears she will be a fitting tribute to him!
It is all in Vol II of the boo…
Mark
😉
I have to agree that the Defiant is perhaps unfairly dismissed. One only has to look at 54 squadron over the same period in 11 group. Only 5 of the 18 pilots that went into action over Dunkirk were still alive by September. Even the survivors had been shot down multiple times.
Heck, Al Deere alone went through a squadron’s worth of aircraft! 😀
Remind me please, Mark. Was N3200 Geoffrey Stephenson’s or Roger Bushell’s mount?
Never mind. Google provides!
Thanks, Tony.
you know the story of this and how it got here?
A quick note:
There are actually 2 flying UH-1s kicking about the UK, atm. G-UHIH is ex-US army and a Vietnam veteran was purchased from surplus depot in Seattle about 8 years ago.
G-HUEY was ex-Argentine army (AE-413) and captured at Stanley and used as a supply chopper by the garrison then shipped back as a trophy. I’m personally not familiar with its history in the UK, so I’d be eager to hear more as much as Tony.
Err, they made Montgomery a Viscount…..
Isn’t this the one that’s had its first static fuselage removed and rebuilt seperately? Is it public domain what’s happening with that?
Ah, nevermind, that’s LZ842.
Thanks Tony! Looking forward to seeing them. Benson keeps a Merlin Facebook page and if you have an account I’m sure they be happy to see them and publicize them as well.
I’ve been playing this on and off on the PC for the past few weeks. It’s not a hardcore sim and is definetly aimed at arcade play although it’s possible to play it in simluator mode only the boost guages and blind flying panel are actually animated (and the ASI in RAF aircraft display knots even though the dial faces are MPH!).
The single player campaign and single mission set up leaves a lot to be desired, the AI is both terrible and supllied with homing ammunition and the missions themselves are extremely poorly balanced, some can only be completed in arcade mode.
That said, the terrain is beautiful but covers only a small area, ie “Hellfire Corner” with just 3 airfields Manston Hawkinge and Lympne, the latter bizarrely has a guard tower and a pillbox blocking one end of the runway making t/o and landings difficult.
It’s a brilliant knock-about arcade game, especially when played online with friends but its not really a good sim.
Surely it makes sense to break it up and trasport ot. I always remeber what happened to the B-29 Kee Bird in Greenland = (
The distances invovled are often too great or too expensive. Theres dozens of ditched and belly-landed wrecks sat up there in the tundra (including Yorks and Lancasters) but all are far too remote to get them out at anything like an affordable price.
