The Flying Fortress is at the back of Rougham airfield (Bury St Edmunds), Been in here once so far, seem to recall a lot of memorbilia about. I’ll check this out and get back to you (even closer to home than Lavenham)
I’ll try to get to Lavenham next week, unfortunately life is too busy this week for me to be able to compile an full report….
Sad to say that despite living in the area for 25 years (apart from a brief stay in Norfolk) I’ve never yet made it in to The Swan.
Packard simplified the Merlin for mass production. There seem to be many differences between the two engines. Of course if you have a Mustang then a Packard is much better…..
Small request Moggy, next time you are offering Adnams, any chance of picking a subject I know something about???
Roger Freeman is as far as I know still about, saw him a couple of times over the summer with some parties of veterans.
The clam doors are held up by hydraulic pressure, when parked it is generally standard practice to release the hydraulic pressure in the system via the pressure dump handle, hence the doors then drop. This also saves you from retracting the undercarriage etc in error on the ground.
If the dump valve is not pulled then as the pressure drops off the doors will start to drop but not evenly.
I think save the Lyneham Comet, would be more commendable.
Now there’s an interesting thing…. What happened to the Forum rescue attempt?
So it must be a different team to those who built the Vimy…. Seems an interesting idea, but dare I ask why????? Seems a massive undertaking for little return. Best of luck to them however.
Could always mount it like the F5 replica at Alconbury, that would take up less room, otherwish it could always be a big car port……
Where is this beast being built? UK, US, or elsewhere?
As I understand it the Bof B Mitchell still exists and was rebuilt by Tom Reilly as Chapter XI, where it is now I don’t know. The Aces High aircraft was ex Tallmantz and is also back in the US as a Warbird.
Seems amazing to me, go away for a couple of days and a war breaks out at Duxford. Would as much fuss have been made had ARCO/HFL chosen to base themselves at a different airfield somewhere? Should we not be thankfull that there are a group of engineers working hard to rebuild and preserve some very rare aircraft which are then regularly on public view on the same airfield. It must be very difficult for all the engineers at Duxford to maintain concentration with hundreds of people asking questions day in day out.
Guess this has all got a bit out of hand, think I’ll crawl back into a little hanger in the peace and quiet of the countryside now.
Ah now I was in Long Stratton……. I’m just trying to do my best to confuse everyone….
I know a Stephen Arnold, he’s a tax man….. However he has nothing to do with Flying A Services. Doubt he’d know what he was doing with aircraft however…. That said I’m sure David Arnold knows exactly what he’s doing with his own aircraft. One problem being finding a permanent location in the UK to house the aircraft.
Can’t think of any of their aircraft that have gone back into a container after rebuild, however they do have aircraft that remain in their containers after being imported / re-imported…..
The Seafire III had one very brief engine run (about 30 seconds at most) some years ago. After further work it was discovered that there was a problem which needed major work which is still underway today. It may very well have been cancelled as the CAA could be waiting for paperwork. The pictures of it at Earls Colne are at least 6 years old.
I saw the fuselage a year ago in bits, I’m sure some progress must have been made since I last saw it.
