No, never flown with him, Andrew Castleden started my tailwheel conversion in his Citabria and I finished it in the Stearman with Tony Richards
Were there not reports in the aviation mags a while ago about a series 1 748 going to the DAS at Duxford or did I dream it?
You must surely be eyeing up the possibility of gratuating to the Mustang, as soon there will be two of them on your little airfield;) ๐ ๐
Anyways, congratulations on the Stearman, I didnยดt know you were flying the beast already.
Been flying the Stearman all summer, logged 25 hours in it now, what a fantastic aeroplane.
As for the Mustang… its a nice idea, it will certainly give me 2 to attack with spanners…
Which Flight School you went to?
Anglo American Aviation in San Diego
What are your experiance with them?
Hard work but I enjoyed it
What was your time span with them(How long it took you for graduation)?
27 Days (48 1/4 hours)
Did you get regular flying
Yes, every day almost
Weather conditions
Very good apart from some mist on a few days. I came back to the UK to start to learn to fly when wether plays a part
Instructors
Flew with 2, one I go on very well with, te other I didn’t gel with
Planes condition
As good (or bad) as any club aircraft I have seen over here
And if possible tell us where you are working now
I only for fun, no interest in taking it much further than the Stearman I currently fly
Are there many plates in Pooleys taken from 6000 feet then?
Well the pictures are pretty small so maybe…
A nice 2008 copy of Pooleys, now when I arrive overhead an airfield I can flick through until I find one where the picture matches whats on the ground, I will then know where I am.
Other than that I have been spending money on books: Mustang, The Racing Legend: Wet Wings and Drop Tanks: The Mighty Eighth Warpaint and Heraldry: Mighty Eighth In Colour.
On the subject of U.S rebuilds, can anyone shed any light on who may have done this rebuild?
It is a V-1650-7 which I have in from a customer in the UK. Odd thing is that it has not been run, but has had a professional rebuild done and sadly there is no paperwork with it.
He purchased it from Denis Kay about 10 years ago.
The colour scheme tells me it must have come from across the pond.Pete
Interesting paint scheme on that engine, perhaps the bottom end was rebuilt by one organisation and then finished off by another team maybe? I remember Nixon did a red engine for Eddie Coventry for TD248, I prefer black Merlins myself….
Have i entererd a parallel universe, Yak11 fan???- the ONLY way you could improve on a Spitfires looks IMHO are to make it look like an SR-71!
Ah you mean remove the engine squash it a bit and stuff a couple of bunsen burners up it, lovely :p
Bograt,
Hence one of the main reason the UK and Europe will never see any Yanks bring there birds over because of this rather stupid regulation.
I’m sorry to say but I don’t think you will see Liberty Belle or any other US based Bomber come across the Pond till the CAA and the EU come up with some sort of Regulation that exempts them from allowing paying passengers.
What about money raised in other ways such as sponsorship or airshow appearance fees?
Can only improve its looks.
What a good idea, its been done before with a Mustang so thats ok, not sure the Spitfire’s weedy little undercarriage could take it though….
Very nice, thank you very much for sharing these pictures.
That’s not Jersey Aviation is it? I thought they went out of business some years ago, around 1996/7.
They stopped overhauling Merlins then.
Right now, I believe the best sources for parts and airworthy overhauls, are all in USA.
Not necessarily, there are 2 workshops producing Merlins in the UK, some (most??) parts can still be obtained in the Channel Islands.
Are there any archeology forums? I want to suggest putting houses on some site or other they have been faffing around with in Colchester.
