Which of course justifies everything. Please give this charade of equivalence a break. I believe (today, right now) that serial murdering is my forte and I go on and conduct a few attacks – would that make me equivalent to professional soldiers and the code of conduct they usually abide by, in civilized countries?

Some of those in Gitmo were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Others like John Walker Lindh chose where they wanted to be and paid the price. Is that really so hard to discern!

I am not even western but can certainly testify that those fighting the ISAF in Afghanistan are terrorists, and the likes of Zarqawi who chose to attack civilians by intent are definitely terrorists.

It does matter as to who does the killing. In any civilized nation state, whose rules we all agree to abide by, the task is mandated and done only by professional soldiers, whose code of conduct and rules of engagement are decided by the nation state. In the case of Afghanistan and Iraq and many other places besides, when anyone can conduct an attack purely directed at civilians for the sake of creating and sustaining a feeling of terror, these people are not soldiers, they are terrorists. No amount of moral equivalence and trying to posit that all soldiers are killers & since terrorists kill they too are soldiers will change this basic fact. Heck, even if you Venn diagram it, it wont work.

That soldier was kidnapped and not captured because he wasn’t fighting. He was just inside a tank, in a military outpost, OUTSIDE of Gaza, well inside the internationally recognized borders of Israel. So yeah, sneaking in in a tunnel to a sovereign country in order to execute an aggresive action and attack people who posed no threat on them (soldiers or civilians) is kidnapping – not capturing.
This is not a matter of a resistance to occupation, as one might say, and it’s not OK since it was an attack against an occuping military force – it was an attack on Israel, on Israeli soil, against Israelis. In that sense, it’s completely wrong.

And then there is the young civilian who is missing and probably has been kidnapped in the West Bank.

How about 10.000 palestinians who are in Israeli torture cells?!! They not civilians?

I would respectfully contend that, if there are any “idiots” to be found in this forum, they are the members who think that the code of conduct doesn’t apply to them.

It is perfectly possibly to make your points clearly and firmly without resorting to name-calling.

Those who feel that they need to, or are entitled to, insult other members need to carefully consider whether they are posting on the correct site for their needs.

I’m not sure tunneling into a camp and kidnapping a (probably unarmed off-duty) soldier is what I’d call a real “military target”.

And if the soldier is a “military target” legally captured by an opposing military force, I’d expect him to be treated according to international law.
That, I hope, would preclude a televised execution.

Normaly, I would feel it is a “bad ” thing for Iran to develop Nukes – under the pretense that the fewer WITH nukes now, the better. BUT, I wasn’t too worried – who’s going to do something as stupid as starting a nuke war with a country with more nukes, right?

However, it was the comments made by the Iranian leader, that changed my mind.

These are not direct quotes, but they were esentially what he said:
Israel will be wiped off the map…
Any nation that does not support us(in wiping them off the map) will also be wiped off the map…
Iran has the right to distribute the weapons to whomever it chooses…

IF Iran was saying they wanted nukes to strike some balance, then that’s one problem to deal with. Still an issue to be delt with, but it’s not a horribly unprecidented thing.

The reason the world’s all worried, is that Iran’s leader is saying that they are going to destroy Israel, and all their enemies, AND they want to build a bomb.

You are all arguing that Iran is justified to build nukes as a deterrant – but that’s not the point. Iran is SAYING they’re going to do all sorts of bad stuff, and the world can’t ignore it and let it happen unchecked.

Think from the Israeli perspective: A country within missle range is promising to destroy your country, over and over. There are some insane, suicidal, terrorist muslim extremists involved in the country’s leadership. We all know the majority of the people are not crazy, but the entire populace of Germany wasn’t nuts, were they? What the people of Israel have to worry about, is a crazy leader of Iran developing a nuke, and nuking their country, without regard for the consequence!

If Iran was being led by a non-crazy, then this woulnd’t be as much of an issue.

They’ve been involved in many wars with Arab states because they were attacked or they had word of an impending attack…… Whatever your opinion on their policies regarding the Palestinians, the same does not apply to their dealings with other nations in the region. Israel is no more a nuclear threat to the Middle East than England, France, or the United States. Iran getting nukes isn’t likely to calm the Israelis either……rather make them more nervous than ever. Especially seeing as Iran’s president has made it quite clear that his goal is to “destroy the state of Israel.”

Irael is just a game. Iran play it smart. They use Israel because they know if they dont use it Arab countries neighboring Iran will be woried about Iran as a Shia muslim get Nuclear weapon. So to make mind of Those Arabs safe iran use Those words.

Well, I’m not living within potential Iranian-ICBM range like you guys. If you feel comfortable with Iran having nukes, given the state of Iranian politics as of late AND their proximity to Europe, then fine.

I think it’s just easier to prevent them from building nukes than it is to intersept them on their way to our European friends.
