It’s too bad that the Fed and Prov govt were not able to build the new hangar to a size that they had hoped for..they managed to get something about 3/4 of their original design but it is still very very nice…but it will be hard to find places under cover for the soon to be retired Buffalo and SeaKing examples..space will be very limited…
A B707 would have been quite the addition to the museum…but quite the challenge to land on the strip…but the Argus did manage on the frozen runway but I am not sure if it was that same 3300ft runway at Rockcliffe..
Well here is a piece of 707-400 or DC-8-40 history…a Rolls Royce Conway Engine that is in store in the new hangar…most likely from an Air Canada DC-8..
North American TB-25L Mitchell Mk 3 PT 5244/108
Vickers Viscount 757 CF-THI ( was stored outdoors for the last 37 yrs)
Canadair DC-4GM NorthStar 1 ST 17515 (Restoration Project) it is the only complete example left in the world.
Grumman G21-A Goose C-FMPG ex RCMP
Enjoy
Andrew
Heinkel He-162A-1 Volksjager 120086 (museum has two examples in storage the other one being 120076)
Canadair CL-28/CP107 Argus Mk2 10742 – her last flight was made on Feb 10 1982 when it was flown into Rockcliffe airport to become part of the museum’s collection.
Fairey Battle Mk 1T R7384
Here are a few more:
Bristol Beaufighter T.F Mk X RD867
DHC-Dash 7 Prototype C-GNBX
Bristol 149 Bolingbrooke Mk IVT 9892
Consolidated Vultee B-24L Liberator GR VIII
Junker J1 252
Sikorsky R-48
Consolidated PBY-5A Canso Mk. II SR CV423
Lockheed L-1329 C-140 Jetstar 6 C-FDTX
Avro Arrow Wing Tips from aircraft # 201
So this flight to Oz will most likely be her last then..
Still a very suitable retirement for this old gal…nice dry climate…it would make an interesting DVD documentary to follow this story of her flight back to Oz…
What are the plans for HZ-123?
How complete is the SeaVixen at the museum? I remember seeing it a few years ago and it looked pretty good then..
Are you going to paint the Sea Vixen in Red Bull colours? 🙂
She looks great…now time to turn your attention to the Argosy!!
Better buy more paint!!
Southend used to have a few classic 707’s on the apron.
Koda Air Cargo 9L-LDU and African Airlines TL-ADJ were residents for some time…and both flew out under their own steam or jet fuel…I think 9L-LDU was burn and wfu and not sure on the whereabouts of Tl-ADJ??
I think EL-AKJ or N2NF cn 19375 still survives at Southend, the cockpit was a victim of arson in 2003..it last flew in late 1998…
Great to see that somebody have seen the importance of saving a few of the earlier generation B707/720 airframes…and to think that she was first flown in 1959 !!!
And I have read that those RR Merlins used on the NorthStar are quite valueable in that were designed for longer engine life….quite popular with the Reno Racers perhaps?
And not to be forgotten was the very nice display put on the DH Buffalo…very impressive with it’s STOL abilities…always looks great in ASR Yellow Scheme…
Also got a chance to view in the new hangar..just a peek at the NorthStar project and also the He162 which was in the smaller restoration shop…
The new storage hanger looks very packed and I think it will be a challenge to photograph much of the aircraft..but they are all in a much better place to ensure their long term survival..
DH Otter and Havard also photographed in the new hangar collection..both used to be fired up on open day’s like Canada Day but this practice seems to have stopped.. 🙁
