Hi for technical info I would recommend as already mentioned by Rocketeer ‘The Hurricane II Manual’ volume 2 of the RAF Museum Series ISBN no. 0 85368 430 8 published by Arms & Armour Press. It is now out of print i think but you may be able to pick up a used copy.

It must be very daunting, the amount of parts that need to be made or reverse engineered.

    Keep up the good work!

How can anyone find the sound of a spitfire offensive anyway? It’s music to the ears!

I have supported the Blenheim project for many years now, well before she had the last accident. I am really looking forward to seeing her fly again and grace our airshows once more. She has been missed. After all you cant beat a good pair of Bristols!

    Liberty Belle

Very sad indeed. It reminds me of seeing the B29 Kee Bird burn out on the glacier (Not that I was there personally I hasten to add). Still it could so easily have been a tragic loss of life as well.

I also remember seeing her under restoration with Tom Reilly. I found Tom to be extremely friendly and he gave freely of his time to show people round his facility giving a personal behind the scenes tour!

Unfortunately I suspect that beaurocracy and red tape, if not defence cuts will ground her long before she becomes too fatigued to fly. If the BBMF were ever to be disbanded due to government defence cuts I fear that she would be considered too much of a national treasure and would become a static museum exhibit.

I sincerely hope that I am wrong and hope to see her flying for many years yet!

I can,t see the Lightning ever being allowed to fly in this country with our CAA rules and regulations as they are today, I am no expert but things seem to be getting worse in this respect.

Not sure about the Bucc, but I suspect similar problems would exist in operating one in the UK?

    Hunters obviously no problem.

Lots of remembrance displays in the pubs eh! How convenient, I bet the aircrews would have approved too!

Think i will have to call in to see a few of those when I am next up your way Moggy.

Can you recommend a few? or is your list too long for this forum?

Surely the memorial is for the men of bomber command who did their duty just as thousands of Germans and other nationalities also did their duty at the time. No one would object to a memorial to the lives lost in Dresden.

A memorial to aircrew who risked all in performing their duties and often paid the ultimate scarifice should not be made into a political debate. I can understand however that it would be a sore point for people who lost loved ones in Dresden, but the memorial is planned to be erected in London not Dresden, and the memorial is in no way specific about the events of Dresden in any case.

I turned up there recently unannounced and asked to have a drink in the 617 Squadron bar. The staff seemed friendly enough and as the room was not in use at the time they allowed me in. I did have a meal there years ago and I seem to remember it was quite good. I have never actually stayed there….yet. The atmosphere of the place is worth going there for I would have thought!

Whatever the condition is on recovery it will certainly be an interesting find and well worth the efforts of recovery and conservation. As long as there is a chance to be able to stabilise it then it is worthwhile, it certainly wouldn’t last forever where it is at the moment. I would love to see pictures of it breaking the surface after all these years, and if it is successful how many other similar and possibly rare airframes are there in our waters that could also possibly be raised in the future? Or are most of them long since turned to mush?
