Nice idea. The poor chap has been living under a misapprehension though. We can also get many of the Trappistes beers here too, the finest beers in the world. Made by monks, the ones who invented beer.There’s a Belgian pub in Hamilton, Le Dome, with Chimay, Leffe, Stella and several other imported beers on tap. It is the best pub experience you can have. They do all the traditional washing the glass ceremony before the pour, etc. I shall have to take Tom there.
I will see if he is up for a trip, though I am going up with my mate Mike and we’re probably staying the night (sleeping in the car again I expect!) to make it a two day event. We have lots planned for Mr Patterson’s visit. I’ll see what he wants to do.

Dave HomewoodJohn, very good points there I guess, but I wonder, do Americans ever get to see what the foreign media says? Or do you actually see much of foreign culture through TV or films etc?
My impession from Americans I’ve known is that the airwaves in your country have loads of local and national news channels but I don’t know if you get to see much news or entertainment from outside your own country’s point of view.
Here in New Zealand we have our own news, made here for TV, radio, internet and newspapers, etc – so yes it has a local slant on things. But we also have free access on TV to BBC World, CBS News, several of Australia’s Channel Nine news shows and that absolute rubbish Fox News Alert show (what a waste of space that is, all war propaganda). As well as straight news we see documentaries made in the UK, the USA, Australia and many other countries.
On radio we have a number of BBC programmes and also Australian made news and documentary shows. We also have access to the web and can source other news agaencies. Our larger newspapers are full of reports from Reuters, Tass and other world agencies, it is not all by New Zealand journalists.
Our ‘popular culture’, ie our televiwsion entertainment, music, films and other day to day stuff is largely American and British. Most people in New Zealand have a good understanding of both those cultures (compared with say the cultures in France or Germany because we are not immersed in it all the time). Most of my friends right here in Cambridge are British, and when I have visited Britain it is virtually the same as New Zealand culturally, except people seem much happier here despite the beer being better there.
New Zealand was colonised by the Poms and has been globalised by the Yanks, so we have a damned good idea of what is going on in the world. We’re not some cut off country that is only fed what our Government wants us to hear.
But I agree, no matter how much we have an understanding of another culture, you really would have to live there to understand it.
Dave HomewoodActually, looking at that photo Martin just posted, and the one on the link I posted, I don’t think they are the same as the Hinds in the film Red Dawn. The cosmetic framework round the front is definately different, as are the wings.

As for “windmill-type flying creatures do not deserve to be discussed on this noble forum” – err, I think Pumas and Hinds are fairly historical, aren’t they? They are certainly not modern, and nor is the film.
Dave HomewoodWell if mobiles emit radio frequencies then another good reason to not take them onto a flightline is the case of the USS Forrestal.
Many people killed and aircraft destroyed, plus a badly burned ship, simply due to some poor sod turning on a transister radio on deck! Transister radios and walkmen were another thing banned completely from the flightline when I was in the air force. The walkman for another obvious reason too of course!
Now you wouldn’t want to switch on Radio Four for the news, or make a call, at an airshow and see some Air Force’s participating modern jet you’re standing next to fire it’s missiles inadvertantly into the BBMF Lancaster, or Sally B, would you? You’d be lynched! (I know it is unlikely that any airshow participant would be carrying live missiles, but you never know!)
As for using your phone at a servo, is it more dangerous than when you restart the ignition on your car? (serious question, not statement)

Red Dawn stands up to time far better than Rambo ever did.
Dave HomewoodFlood, I totally agree about Alastair McGowan. His show is way too much soccer player-oriented. He is a talented man but for us in NZ at leats the football jokes are meaningless and repetitive. His show has only run one series, in a poor afternoon slot. It had some good gags. Hedid the Royal Family as The Royle Family, brilliant. 🙂 Although his show isn’t well known, we have seen him interviewed on Parky and on Brucie, etc here too. He can be clever. But Dead Ringers leaves his series in the dust.
BBC7 aired a 1977 edition of the Mike Yarwood show recently. I’d read all about him and how popular he was in the 1970’s. etc. So I was excited to finally hear him. But it was soooo bad. Half of it were has-been politicians long dead and never heard of, but the ones I should have recognised were just appaulling! There’s nothing worse than a bad impression. How did he ever become popular? And the jokes all fell flat. At least Dead Ringers and The Now Show mixes cutting and hilarious satire with its impressions.
As for the writers, yes I’ve noticed that. Mind you all the Goodies and Cleese and many others have long been scriptwriters, as has Eric Sykes (did you know he even worked on Teletubbies!) and many others going way back. Most of the Doctor series was written by the Goodies, and Took and Feldman also wrotes screeds of stuff.
Moggy – not Ken Platt (isn’t he in Coro Street? :diablo: ) and definately not the Clitheroe Kid.
Auster Fan – no, not Holloway either. He is brilliant though, or was.
Hmmm, who the heck was that guy. I can hear his gags right now. Another running gag he had was one where he argued with ‘the wife’, she being in another room (but he did both voices of course and the male voice is a downtrodden Andy Capp type). He was a real pioneer of some types of comedy, and his stuff is still very funny. BBC7 even did a documentary about him. He apparently ran this sausage empire, and at cocktail parties where he entertained clients, etc, he used to do stand-up routines simply for fun. A BBC producer heard him doing it for his clients in a bar once, and offered him a contract. He didn’t want to do it because he was making a lot of money in sausages, but they eventually persuaded him to, and he became the country’s most popular comedian. This was about 1950. He then disappeared and has been virtually forgotten till BBC7 dusted off the 55 year olf records. It’ll come to me, I hope…

The list could go on for miles, that’s just a few of my favourites from the top of my head, with a few others whom I haven’t heard a lot from but I know what I have heard is good,
If any of these people did rank at all, they should have been above bloody Woody Allen and Eric Morecambe, two of the least funny people that have roamed the planet. And that also goes for Ernie Wise and Dudley Moore, two awful little men! In my opinion of course.
Who was that 1950’s comedian that told long stories, and did all the voices like a little boy at the doctor’s annoying his dad, or a man being attacked by a dog, etc. He owned a sausage empire oop north in his spare time. I’ve heard him on BBC7 a while back. Very funny chap.

I’ve had this a bit lately since I upgarded my security on the PC, but only when certain members post – most photos are fine. So are they posting a different way that my PC doesn’t recognise? I can no longer see photos on ebay or Trademe any more either. It’s very annoying. Does anyone have any clues as to how i can rectify this?
Dave HomewoodDamien, speaking from experience, the view from the turret is great for photography (and remember the OFMC used their one for filming from too) but alas my auto camera was not fast enough to counteract the violent vibrations, so most of my shots were a bit blurry. A good camera like your’s would do fine I’d think.

Dave HomewoodThe Avenger is a wonderful warbird, and indeed practial. They are massive inside and can transport loads of people and spares, etc.
I’ve been told a new group here in NZ is planning to import another Avenger. I hope it happens.
Dave HomewoodThere are some lovely photos of ‘Sally B’ in her various guises, including lots in bare metal, in the excellent book ‘Sally B: A Very Special Lady’ by Ken Ellis (Midlands Publications, 1992). I have to agree she looked stunning in the scheme with the yellow tail and wingtips. But then, she always looks great.
