Glad to have helped and thanx for those clips. Thinking back, the loudest “buzzsaw” visitor to us used to be the Boeing 720Bs os the Danish airline Conair. BTW I cannot take credit for the term “buzzsaw” that was told to be by an SAS engineer on a DC8-63 turnround many moons ago!:)
Great shots…all of them. Is the last one Madurodam? spelling may not be right!:)
Very interesting question and I can only offer the following based on my own experiences with the types, which I used to ramp in a previous life. Of the 2 types mentioned the “buzzsaw” sound you refer to was always more obvious to my ears with the 707 although it was present to a lesser degree with the DC8. Compared to the 707 the DC8 tended to have more of a “rumble” to its sound on take off than did the 707. Another factor in the comparison is airframe noise which affects the engine sound of a plane in flight as it passes over, there was even a difference between the take off sound of the DC8-63 and the shorter DC8-62 ie: on the -62 the fan or “buzzsaw” was more noticeable than on the bigger -63, the 707s that I ramped did not seem to vary except the one or two turbojet examples that used to visit us in the early 80s…they were something to hear on take off!! Having flown on the 707-320 Srs and the DC8-63 the only real difference that I can remember was a little more “rushing air” sound in the DC8 over the 707. The other thing to keep in mind is the differences in design of the engine nacelles on the two types which I’m sure had an effect on how they sounded. Only personal observations, but I hope the info helps:)
Great images man….When I was a Traffic Officer at STN back in the 80s I used to ramp the Balkan Tu154s none of the other T/Os were that keen to do them or any other of our Eastern Bloc visitors come to that….bet they would now:) We used to get the Odyssey 757 twice a week along with the Worldways types though usually the DC8s. Loved working the JAT flights, usually DC9s at STN and Aviogenex Tu134 and 727-200, we did not see the 737 very often. Thanx for posting them!
A nice line up. Shame about the Dash 8 in there though!:)
Repaint? Then its got to be either Jersey Airlines, who I believe was the launch customer, the original British United colours or how about the classic British United Island Airways sandstone and blue “hockeystick” scheme?:)
They don’t get much better than that! I can remember the Eagle Brits doing circuits at Stansted as a child in the late 60s. A lovely livery on any type. Thanx for sharing that pic:)
A sad business . Heartfelt condolances to all concerned:(
No I didnt but wish I had, love the VC10
Almost as good looking as the IL62!:):):)
Here, here to that. Hurry back to that keyboard Steve! (When you’re better of course):)

I used to do loadsheets for the Air UK Heralds and also the Skyguard aircraft flown in the livery of Securicor. A lovely aircraft and nice to see images of one. Thanx:)
Il62: As we move to the close of the LoCo era. No. It is full fare (=rip off) legacy that is expiring.
Lets wait and see……….
To be honest, without FR and U2, STN would not have seen the success that it has!
That could be debatable. Many legacy carriers such as SAS, Lufthansa and KLM were never really happy sharing the STN field with the likes of Ryanair et all, and this may have robbed STN of other prestige carriers that although looked likely to come never did. I was told by a Lufthansa staff member just prior to that carriers closure at STN that it was the image of STN as a LoCo airport along with a lack of long haul full service connections that played a large part in that carriers decision to leave, one wonders how many other ‘leavers’ were influenced by the same thoughts. As we move to the close of the LoCo era the future looks very uncertain for some of that ilk.
You are more than welcome, just happens to be my favourite era in aviation, hopefully its accurate info:)
