No trace of the aircraft or pilot was found. As Adrian Gray says, that was because they dug in the wrong place!

The local MP has always been adamant that no building should take place unless and until the wreckage and Eric have been recovered and I think he had pressured Gravesham Council into agreeing this. If building takes place there will be a green or square over the spot if he isn’t found.

The case could and should have been resolved long ago for the sake of Eric’s family.

It does make you wonder why this has taken so long to conclude, especially as the developers are standing by,at least there is a little piece of mind that F/S Williams crash-site will not be developed on,(well done to the local MP) it would be good if he could put some pressure on the local authorities to have one more attempt for the sake of the Williams family.

    or an Agfa Karat!

Back to the thread – I wish the investigation could draw all the resources that are undoubtedly out there:

Andy to ensure right place, RAFM to endorse, a professional and sympathetic recovery and if something is to be found; MoD/RAF to give proper burial of a true hero and one of their own. – That is the least this brave man and his family deserve.

It is not rocket science – this time of year should remind all about the bigger picture. It is not about egos, past rifts, money or anything. It is about a brave man who gave all his tomorrows for our todays. This is a time of goodwill – Eric deserves it

    (I agree 200 Per Cent)

A good number shot down, in fact!

So definitely more than one shot down over Engalnd.

Would anyone know where i could possibly source any Werk numbers or dates as the internet doesn’t seem to have any sources.

just see a FW 190 crashed in Staplehurst Kent again no year or Werk number.

(Maybe internet Sources mean shot down and not landing at its own accord)

Didn’t at least one 190 misread his Tom Tom or equivalent and land his intact a/c here, believing he was in France or Germany ?

ON April 16 1943, a single-engined aircraft was heard approaching West Malling airfield.

The plane circled twice, then landed. The station staff, assuming it was a Defiant low on fuel, sent a crash crew to meet the pilot but, on arriving, they discovered a German Focke Wulf FW-190.

LANDING: A German Focke Wulf FW-190. Exictement at West Malling airfield when four tried to land there in error one night.

LANDING: A German Focke Wulf FW-190. Exictement at West Malling airfield when four tried to land there in error one night.

The pilot, Feldwebel Otto Bechtold, immediately gave himself up to the ground crew. A second aircraft landed but realising his mistake, the pilot attempted to take off, under fire, and was injured as the plane crashed on the airfield.

I can think of three off the top of my head – one near Dungeness and at least two near West Malling – so I think you’ve been sold a pup.

    Adrian

Thanks for your reply Adrian,i must admit i found it hard to believe that there was just the one (internet sources)

Would you know the werk numbers and dates of the 3 aircraft that you have mentioned?

So would there be any future possibility that this site could be re excavated? or sadly is there to be no conclusion.

Full story here. Chapter 12; ‘Blue One Still Missing…’

I should point out that discussion about this specific topic a few years back resulted in unexplained bans on forum members, including, utterly shamefully I think, a relative of Flt Sgt Williams. The thread was also deleted and discussion about the topic carried dire warning as to consequences, as I recall. No explanation was ever given, I’m afraid.

Sorry as you may know im pretty new to this great forum,(member of some 2 years or so) so i don’t relate to previous threads,on this subject.but just very interested (especially now) as to why there was no conclusion to Flt Sgt Williams previous excavations, at the end of the day isn’t it why we all relate to the courage of the likes of Pilot Williams,i feel very sad that this excavation hasn’t as yet been laid to rest.
