Great shots Si, Was thinking of taking a trip there with Spalding next year, is it worth it? From your shots it looks a great place for spotting.
The North airport is probably the best for photgraphy with a pretty good vantage point along the runway and it is used by quite a varied amount of traffic. I think the high point is the Iberia A340 which comes in from Madrid in the morning and the Cygnus DC8/757 which operates a cargo service to the island. The south is mainly holiday traffic with the usual TOM FCA MYT TCX AEU etc etc aircraft interspaced with some private jets. One thing that is essential for your visit is a rental car!

Mowers,
I am on leave at the mo. however if no-one has posted a reply by the time I return to work, I will do some digging for the answer.

Looking good there cant wait to see the real thing.

James,
Whilst I was at BZZ, I noticed an A330 in all white scheme parked near 99 Sdn which is the C17 squadron, didn’t get a picture of it but there was an awful lot of interest in the jet. It had a an Egyptian reg, maybe a MRTT contender?
I work near the Future Tanker guys, I will find out what the latest is on the new jets and post something. Incidentally, the VC10 guys were saying that the aircraft will be in service until at least 2013.

Adam…..simply stunning, just love the close up and angle of the 757, how on earth do you manage to produce such constantly great images.

Thanks for the comments guys, much appreciated; out of interest I did a search on A.net for this airframe and there is a shot of her from 1974, considering her age she was in pristine condition and the boys and girls taking care of this old lady really take pride in what they do. Out of interest, does anyone know how old this aircraft realy is and is she an ex commercial jet?

Superb Damian, the last 738 shot is just fantastic.

Think it is an ex Gill Air machine not sure? Just wondering the last shot is it ment to train them if a fuel tanker was refueling a plane and caught fire?
James
That is exactly the scenario they use, fuelling aircraft and tanker catches fire.

If you used the landing spot as per the grid, yes but as already said the A/C was launched from the rear deck edge with the main wheels at the edge it did work. Guess you had to be there and we were fighting a real war not playing and as has often been seen in the past what happens up front is what the boys achieve way outside what they are told by back room guys can be achieved. And I will end it at that. The FAA is one of the best of the best and have always come up truimphs when asked to do the impossible.:diablo:
Mate I am not getting into a bun fight with you, I know all about front line / war / operational risk etc and have been in plenty of ships / units where we have taken those very risks be it in the Falklands / Gulf War 1 / 2 and Afghanistan. Having just completed a 6 year back to back Front Line tour onboard INVC and LUST, I hope you are not implying I am a back room boy? Having served in the FAA for 26 years and still serving I think I am well qualified to speak on the subject. PM me and if you are still serving, I would be happy to get you a visit to the unit I currenty work in which is full of recent ex front line SMR’s, AEO’s (Lx / Harrier / SK4 / ASAC) and operators (Lynx Pilot QHI and SUY Aviation Officer Aircraft Handling).

A big repair, especially with the proximty of the static port 🙁
Lots of overtime 😀
Also depends if it cut through any stringers or longrons, if not then a patch will do the trick. looks a far enough from the static port not to have caused any damage. I guess if that had been damaged (no go item) it would have been grounded and not flown o NCL for repair.
No mate, Steve Metcalf the Training and Development Business Manager (top bloke). Mr Brown is very busy at the moment with the building of the Cat 10 Training Module which is opening in November….looks very like and A380 mock up.

Brilliant pictures there Si. 🙂
Just two questions though:
1. Why are the seats rear facing?
2. What job do you do, I guess your in the RAF?Cheers Tom
Tom,
The seats on the VC10 have always faced rearward as they say it is safer in the event of a crash (that’s what they say!!), don’t ask me why civil aircraft don’t do this, I guess it is something to do with convincing passengers that it is better facing aft. I can see the point of it as in some other miltary transports they have the seats facing rearward. I flew off the USS Dwight D Eisenhower back in August on a C2 Greyhound with the seat facing aft and no windows….really weird when you are shot off the catapult, your eyes feels as i they have popped out of their sockets.
Sorry not Air Force, Fleet Air Arm.
