I see Biggin Hill has 5 Hurricanes scheduled to attend this year –

    Hurricane MK I (R4118)
    Hurricane Mk IIb (BE505)
    Hurricane Mk IIc (LF363)
    Hurricane Mk IIc (PZ 865)
    Hurricane XIIa (G-HURRI)

Is this the largest gathering of Hurricanes in recent times?

I think I’m safe in saying that we had all the UK’s airworthy Hurricanes together for the first time. Certainly I don’t recall seeing more than 5 airworthy Hurricanes together.

The Demoiselle replica has been borrowed from RAFM Stafford.

Also if anyone has any connection with or fond memories the old Wolverhampton airport at Pendeford you may find a few familiar faces at the event.————Balliol.

Ah, thanks for clarifying that Balliol. That would be the the one that the Frenchman was flying in the film, which landed over the top of haystack with a couple misbeaving themselves in then?:) Haven’t been to Halfpenny Green since they staged the Kings Cup Air Race there in 1967.

Best line-up for years? Wow, the past few years must have been even more rubbish than I imagined then! Maybe I (and my colleagues) are looking at a different show list, but the one I’m looking at looks like a complete bore.

Oh well, each to his own, but I’m certainly not the only person to think that Waddington’s show has completely lost any appeal that it once had. Last year’s show was awful but countless optimists said “wait until this year – things will be so much better”… and yet, it’s the same tired old show. I mean really, people are actually getting excited because there’s an RC-135 in the static park? Good grief, are folks really that desperate to find something to get giddy about?

Maybe I am being harsh on the organisers. Don’t care really, I don’t owe them anything nor does anybody else. I’m a punter just like anyone is, and if that’s what they think the RAF’s “showcase” should look like, well they’re welcome to it!:p

    Tim,

I think you and I have been to too many shows as those that are raving at the line-up are probably younger than us and haven’t seen this stuff before.
I must say there is nothing there I haven’t seen before and it’s too far/too expensive to trek all the way there to see the same old stuff again.
As far as show rating go, however, it is probably second-best to RIAT

Thanks Will, this looks very interesting but is the first I have heard of it?
Their website states ” aircraft from those Magnificent Men in the Flying Machines”….which ones, as I can’t see the Shuttleworth collection allowing their Boxkite and Triplane to fly all the way there from Old Warden?

    Oops! Not even a typo.

    Thanks for the correction, Adrian!

Seems several posters have made that mistake and it would be rooed of me not to point it out for historical accuracy!

Circa 1980, I collected a Balliol from Henlow and took it to Cosford and reassembled it beside the TSR2. I am certain it was not a WAFU machine, but maybe the experts can correct me.

There is only one Balliol in the UK – this one WL732, so that would be it. BTW, what is WAFU?

So i make the list something like this, can anyone correct or add to it?

    UK

    G-APOZ – Showing as a Jodel D112.

All acounted for but G-APOZ is showing as a Jodel.

I am wondering if this is a typo error and should read G-APDZ, which was a Tiger Moth and may have been scheduled for Jackaroo (not Jackeroo) conversion but got written off on 24 June 1960?

I hope the MoD got a partial refund for this gaff? Surely all the replica Spitfires are painted in the same camo pattern, so the story of ‘picking up the wrong set of wings’ surely couldn’t happen? Also, it’s not every day that one of these is made, so I doubt if there is another set of wings already painted at the factory?

I have fond memories of Jackaroos during the early ’60s, when my parents often took me for picnics at Thruxton during summer Sundays. I recall seeing ‘the production line’ there in a big black hangar and was lucky to have flights in G-AOIX and G-AOEX with my Dad on balmy summer days. The Jackaroos were operated by the Wiltshire School if Flying and all painted red and silver. Then about mid-60s they were painted black prior to all being sold and presume the Wiltshire School of Flying disbanded?

Surely it has to be Key Published tome by Eric Morgan and Edward Shacklady?
For me, this IS the definitive book on the type, but would complement it with Air Britain’s “Spitfire International” book

IIRC, there was some talk of the Russians offering the use of their MiG-25U ejection seat testbed for supersonic ejections.

Err, Ken are you saying there might be a possibility of seeing a Martin-Baker operated MiG-25U at next year’s Northolt photocall??

We do anticipate showing her this year, subject to Matt.

Fingers crossed that she will be added to Yeovilton’s participation list then? Celebrating 70 Years of Yeovilton without the Vixen in the display would be like having a birthday cake with no candles?:(

Was rather hoping she might make Kemble next weekend, Biggin Hill or even RIAT?

Have to say I am looking forward to this one, rumour has it the Air cadets burgers are a close second to Mildenhall of yesteryear!

I prefer ‘beef’ burgers, as Air Cadets can be a bit chewy 😉

Interesting that it is only Martin-Baker that have used Meteors for ejection set trails. The A&AEE at Boscombe Down used a Canberra B2, but with the same engine layout, this also seems a logical type. As for the Russians….they used an An-12 with extended pod stuck out where the tail gunner’s position is!!!
