It’s a research project by an American university. The USAF, being a major fuel user, has a natural interest in promoting fuels not subject to the whims of Islamic radicals. The project is trying to develop alternative fuels which can be used at the extreme cold of high altitude flight.

They were sold to collectors from South Africa. Does anyone know what their current status is? I was able to track one F-86 is in Australia and a restored T-28 in South Africa. However, NONE of the F-5s have been seen.

Does anyone know anything about where the F-5s might be currently?

I recall seeing a photo in AFM some time ago. It was identified as an F-5E from Ethiopia, in Iran, one of the group of F-5s purchased by Iran, probably for spare parts.

Sad news, BTW, what tank is this? M48 ?

To be precise, it is a M41A3. A light tank with a 76mm pea shooter main gun. In the old South Vietnam it was known as the “Coup Tank”, only useful to intimidate the population during a coup, and too weak to actually use against the enemy in the field.

Do you have the history on this crash – Post 547

I believe the aircraft is a C-130A ex-USAF in civilian service as a fire-bomber. One shed it’s wing in a fatal crash while on fire-bombing duty in California a couple years ago.

What is the story of the Israeli Apache?

Reportedly, two IDF Apaches collided during recent night ops near the Lebanon border. Possibly this is the remains of one of them.

The Mirage III O were fitted with a Rolls-Royce Avon RB.146, not ATAR engines. So ATAR has nothing to do with the rumours you mentionned …

What is the link between M53 and ATAR ? This is two totally different engines.

Are you SURE about the IIIO fleet being powered by R-R Avons? I recall an article which stated ONE Mirage IIIO was trialed with an afterburner equipped Avon, roughly the same dimensions as the ATAR – would not have been a difficult job, but the trials were for naught. The reason the Pakistanis wanted the RAAF Mirages was the total commonality with their existing fleet.

Agree, definately Rhodesian. It’s Rhodesian camo with the post-UDI roundel. The Rhodesian Canberras performed high altitude photo-recon and photographic mapping missions for the Portuguese.

Last I heard, the Russians were looking at the Tu-204, twin turbofan, Boeing 757 sized, airliner as a replacement platform for their 4-engined turboprop maritime patrol aircraft.

And why bother going to the expense of underwater salvage when, at last report, Vietnam still had plenty of restorable Hueys for sale?

The F/A-18 is designed to slam down onto a carrier deck, the suspension must be stiff, not soft. Otherwise, suspension rebound would cause it to crow-hop across the deck. Russian planes have historically been designed to operate from rough fields, I would expect they would have softer suspensions with more more travel in the oleos.

Reply-Question 1. When the engine fires up, the jet blast effectively shifts the center of gravity forward, putting additional down pressure on the nosewheel oleo, compressing it. Then the tailpipe is elevated.

I agree, the Israelis could, indeed, hit some and maybe all of Iran’s known nuc facilities. But the Iranians are bound to be expecting it and the attack would be bloody on both sides. And what would follow could get seriously out of control.

This is stretching the “small air force” designation, but some years ago, the Taiwanese repowered about 50 T-28 Trojans with Lycoming T53 turboprops. They called it the AIDC T-CH-1. Would anyone have some pictures of this rare bird?

The JL-8 (or K-8) Trainer is Zambian Air Force, not Namibian.
