Also, our man Scorpion82 and a few others around the net are suggesting that the UK is no longer ditching its Tranche 1s.

It was delayed I think but it’s still a relatively near future inevitability.

There’s too many other things to spend the money on right now.

More accurately carrier ASAC isn’t a desperate necessity right now….that is not likely to remain the case far into the future. Swerve is also very right to note that the area where land-based surveillance can be depended on is also very limited.

Thing is that we do have an urgent requirement for a system to deploy from the carrier deck. We need a platform to deliver persistent ISTAR product organically within the group. Currently the mob seem to have the concept that the F35 will be the ISTAR asset and the shooter. With a modest sized air group being embarked routinely though I don’t see that fiction lasting long.

Scaneagle is in the fleet but is obviously inadequate for supporting carrier strike. So were looking to evolve Scaneagle into several hundred kg’s of sensor payload over several hundreds of miles range. Essentially DARPAs TERN territory.

Malaya asked an interesting question as to whether more carrier based projects were being funded under this years SDR. As far as I know the answer is no…but UAV research is still funded through SUAV(E) last I heard. The TERN work to date would seem to offer some potential if it can be tapped into.

I don’t think that’s the case. An ASAC helicopter replacement for fleet defence is already being procured, but for actual missions Sentry AEWs can be used from various NATO and UK bases dotted around the globe. Carrier based AEW is a nice to have but just not essential. I can think of better things to spend that money on right now.

You are talking about K-77m1, the ramjet r-77m1 have been cancelled long time ago, it is said that K-77m1 will match performance of latest aim-120, and have an AESA seeker, however there are no infor whether that seeker is GaAs or GaN , the airframe is normal missiles airframe

My bet would be GaAs. GaN is very expensive for an expendable item.

Any position on the globe? Go away & look up its operating range. And while you’re at it, look up what some of those ‘bases’ consist of.

Did that before I posted. Of course this ignores joint NATO bases and IFR assets. Don’t get me wrong, carrier AEW would be nice but a desperate necessity worth spending a ****-load of money on it isn’t.

Wrong Lukos ! Resolution is dependant on the size of the pixels, not the number of pixels. very common misconception most people have due the the train of though that more megapixel’s equals a better image, this is marketing at its best from digital camera company’s.

Other factors also include, spatial resolution, spectral, temporal and radiometric resolution along with a whole raft of different pieces of the system that make up the final image

    Cheers

We’ve factored in spatial resolution too. DDM-NG covers 180deg with 1280×1024 x 2 sensors. EODAS covered 95deg with 4096×4096 x 6 sensors. DDM-NG has gaps caused by wing obstruction, EODAS doesn’t. Open and shut case. But yes processing is also a factor.

    EODAS per 95deg

    DDM-NG per 180deg

I think my logic is sound.

At least i gave you the link, not my bad if you do not speak french or use auto translation. the claim is originated from a highly respected engineer and haed engineer on Rafale project. Do what you want with it.
Byw, who talked to you about stores?

    Auto Translation?

They’ve claimed a lot of BS in the past, as have you. I just don’t see a sparrow-like RCS with stores.

Whilst I’m sure this is still a very capable system, does it have the feeling on a short-term fix that leaves the door open for something bigger and more comprehensive in the medium term? Or are the RN happy to carry on with rotary AEW do we think?

Something like this would be needed for detecting cruise missiles over the horizon anyway. AEW planes are typically very long range and the Airforce/Navy divide isn’t as strong as it perhaps is in the US, so RAF and RN assets operate together. UK airbases are sufficiently widely disseminated for one of the six Sentry AEWs (seventh used for training) to easily be able to reach a carrier in any position on the globe, not to mention the 14 Voyager tanker aircraft. So the lack of a carrier-bourne AEW is nothing more than a minor inconvenience at best.

This gives a rough picture but they’ve missed Ascension Island (middle of South Atlantic about halfway between Sierra Leone and The Falklands – blacked out on Google Earth:D). So carrier AEW is not really a big issue.

I think it’s a matter of timing. If the Typhoon project started 15 years later than it did, it would probably be a stealth fighter entering service around now. But in the mid-80s nobody was going to commit to that.

Ok that wasn’t informative, and it was only meant as sarcasm . But if you pay attention at the discussion from the start : it went like this :
Halloweene/MSphere : claim something quite unique about Rafale thus make it better than F-35 /Typhoon .

Lukos : claim something unique about Typhoon/F-35 that make them better than Rafale.
…… arguing bla bla bla ( both side)

Halloween/MSphere : made some dodgy claim about Rafale

Lukos : that sounds like BS, gave me the source or some evidence

Halloween /MSphere : no, a pilot on Fb told me but i cant give you his fb or i read it from some super secret source and that source is only available to me

Lukos : make fun of Halloween/MSphere or being sarcastic about Rafale fan

Halloween /MSphere : you are a troll, making fun of lukos
….. bla bla bla both side insult the others

So I think it totally unfair when you claim Lukos is a troll then claim MSphere knowledgeable. Remember why people consider JSR a troll? he making outrageous claim without anything to back up

I know, MSphere alone has made at least three completely BS claims on the Rafale thread, four if we count the DAS vs DDM-NG one, and we’re yet to see any evidence of passive SPECTRA BVR kills with live shots, or even simulated shots beyond what LOAL IIR missiles can do anyway. Halloweene originally claimed 10nm for the simulated shot:

    http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?129627-F-35-News-Multimedia-amp-Discussion-thread-(3)&p=2149816#post2149816

    Now he claims >20nm:

    http://indiandefence.com/threads/eurofighter-typhoon-v-s-dassault-rafale-analysis.22158/page-949#post-414463

The only source appears to show a target on a threat warning display, locked or otherwise, at 7.8nm.

    http://www.defesanet.com.br/rafale/noticia/10893/Shooting-Down-an-Aggressor-on-My-Six–Vive-la-difference-/

Then he says he didn’t say that DEDIRA reduces Rafale RCS to that of a stealth aircraft…

…but now he claims it does:

surprise, link works again. Search for Rafale Confidential on YouTube

    Bah a little hand https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mb8W6QUITMc

That’s in French, so not particularly useful. The claim is BS. You cannot reduce a stores-equipped Rafale to the RCS of a sparrow against what could be several radars by electronic cancellation generated by a few jammers. If it could then France wouldn’t be working on geometrically stealthy designs like nEUROn, and nor would other countries like the US, China and Russia for that matter.

Hear hear! It all sound good to me.
But if you are to play the Devils advocate here, then i suggest you play it right both ways:

Do you call this a informative discussion/input?

There are only two people i have on my ignore list. And that is JSR and Lukos. They both goes under the Stronk US/Russia brand.

I’ll say again, various French Stronk (who definitely shouldn’t be overlooked in the compilation of any respect-worthy stronk list) have said things to this effect.

For once I agree with halloweene, FCAS is to be a system of systems, not one aircraft type.

Did i say that with Dedira Rafale would hae the RCS of a F-22? That DDM-NG was better than EODAS? That Spectra make Rafale immune to missiles???

    Close:

    http://indiandefence.com/threads/f-35-on-queen-elizabeth-carrier.47547/page-6#post-463245

TBH we dont have any clue that active cancellation do exist on any of these planes what Bruno Revellin-Falcoz (head of aerospace academy in France btw) is that from frontal aspect it has the RCS of a sparrow. I have access to the link btw, but cannot give it (as the owner allowed my account only).
What the Rafale project head told to Portail-Aviation is that DEDIRA is flying and working well.

I sure wouldn’t want to get that sparrow stuff in my intake.:D:highly_amused:

Others claimed DDM-NG was better than DAS in their usualy roundabout way, namely MSphere… surprise, surprise.
